I realize fencing attracts zero interest from the local sports news establishment. Additionally I see little evidence of marketing fencing events as something for the man or woman on the street to "come and watch," but has anyone considered trying to get some air time on a university-based or community access TV channel?
Granted, it is a tiny audience but it's a beginning. Maybe just air the semifinals and gold-silver bout of a local tournament.
Just a thought...

That's not bad.
If nothing else, the host club might get a nice, semi-professional tape out of the deal.
If anyone got it on the air, they could always post/email the details to everyone else. We could all watch.

This is not just a Houston thing, either. I bet there are community access channels serving Corpus and for Beaumont-Port Arthur.
What about College Station, Dan? Is there a campus TV station that could run finals of Heavy Metal?
Perhaps a fund-raising video to sell to those who attended?

It's definately an idea worth looking into. Not sure if they could do anything on this short of notice, but maybe they can/will.

Channel 10 in Corpus has been fantastic about covering what we have done here in the past few months (3 separate clips). The local newspaper in Robstown and Calallen have also been really good about it, too (4 articles). All I did was ask for help from lots of people to get the word out that we were trying to bring fencing to the Corpus area, and I found that these three businesses were exceptionally supportive. So- ask and keep asking. Eventually, someone will help. Grace Haberzettle

It helps to have someone send in things ready for the media to use. I have had a lot of sucess getting articles printed in the local papers by having an article pre-written and photographs with captions ready for use. Don't assume they'll come looking for you. They won't. You have to go to them to get coverage. Do assume that they know absolutely nothing about the sport! It isn't football and most will never have even seen it before. They will be hesitant to cover what they don't understand. You also need to invite the media to come to practices and tournaments. Have someone tag after them to explain what is going on. Make it easy for the media to cover you and they will.
