Just curious, but it seems this club's web site is down. Anyone heard anything from the cavaliers, lately?

Last time I fenced with them was way back in 99. Have they developed since then?

I have yet to check w/ Fencing.net as to why the site is down. Until last Thursday I was being hit with the double whammy of the job being real busy and taking a senior lit course at Lamar.... what little time I had I was not too keen to spend looking into this. I plan to find out what is up by Saturday.

Hi! I live in Beaumont. I had no idea we had a fencing club in the area. I have always wanted to learn and was running a search to see if we had any instructors and to find out what I needed to do to get started. Is the club still meeting at St. Marks? Is anyone welcome? Is there anyone I should contact to find out how to get started?
Thanks,

Are the Cavaliers still meeting at St. Marks? None of the other information I can find online is helping me find them.

They are still at St. Marks on Calder. Although I haven't made it out in two months, I know they are still around because I received an email from Fr. Sinclair stating that the Tuesday meeting was cancelled due to All Hallows' Eve.
The club has actually acquired several new members since the Hurricane. The new location has really helped the group.
Okay, I am going to burry my head back into the sand.

: Dear Friends, The Spindletop Cavaliers are alive and well and stabbing in Port Arthur/Beaumont. Fencing times are 7pm-9pm Tuesday and Saturday evenings. We do not fence on holidays or holiday weekends, since we have such a hearty work ethic! Thanks to Hurricane Rita, we now fence at St. Marks Episcopal Church Gym, at 680 Calder in Beaumont. We have several new members, and yes, we were able to make contact with Amber and she has made it to practice a few times. I'll check with Jeremy in regards to our website. I'm not sure what the problem is there. However, if anyone needs to contact us, feel free to e-mail me at aosusa@sbcglobal.net Cheers! Doreen

While looking for something actually unrelated to fencing, I found a discussion forum sponsored by KDFM in the Beaumont area. Lo and behold, that forum had a local "sports & recreation" board, but no mention of fencing. Hey, the Spindletop Cavaliers have been around since 1985. You just know I couldn't let that just stay as it was... KDFM post You never know. It's had 220 views so far. Someone reading might just follow the link in the post and start asking about lessons.

I have sent them an email on your behalf, so they will be contacting you direct with best routes. I could give routes based on maps, but not being a "Golden Triangle" native I may not be up on the vagaries of traffic and road construction (I know those are important considerations in my little corner of heaven). They also have a website here. You will like them. They are a good bunch of people...

Greetings!
If you live in Groves and wish to fence, you found the right place. The Spindletop Cavaliers now fence in Beaumont at St. Marks Episcopal Church on Calder. We fence at 7pm-ish on Tuesday and Saturday nights, until 9pm
For more info e-mail me at aosusa@sbcglobal.net or contact our Coach, Fr. Sinclair Oubre at 409-749-0171.
I'm not sure about the age of your daughter, but just to let you know, we do not take children aged 8 and younger. It's just too difficult for them to really focus and be serious about the sport before age 9 or so.

Here is a brief update on the Cavaliers:
I've been back and fencing consistently since June. We have approximately 10 regular members, of which 9 of them are qualified to fence electric. The Cavaliers are still focused on foil; epee is completely dead at this time. We now have 3 fencers with complete electric sabre kits (myself included). Only one of us, a transplant from out of state, has any experience, but I am excited that we have a new weapon to work with.

I'd say this situation calls for an intervention. Get in there and just take away their foils. Put an epee in their hands. They'll pick it up quickly once you start jabbing them with your own.
Friends don't let friends fence foil.
Tough love!

Friends don't let friends fence foil. Tough love! I have a twofold plan to implement this: 1. Lead the charge to introduce sabre: Done! 2. Offer any of my three working epees to anyone who wishes to learn the true point weapon: Considering it for tonight, but I may hold off. Getting sabre and epee started might be too much of a culture shock for the same month. Thanks for the encouragement!
