Before my time... maybe Augie or Glenn. I, for one, would be curious to hear how the idea got started and how long it ran.

The Bragging Rights tournament was a semi-sober organization of Al Wilson, Howard Williams, Oscar Barrera, Dave Husky and myself, and that is why we chose Calvert. Franklin Hudson got the first speeding ticket, and then the police officer showed the others how to get to the school. We watched Ben Johnson win the Olympics, and one year it was cancelled because of hurricane Gilbert.
I have a couple of trophies from it.

Hey, I sent you an email with some stuff and it didn't go thorugh. Could you let me know your email address? I don't need to bore people with the whole enchalada.

I knew Al Wilson and Dave Husky. We now have an overlap. Cool.

I found my BR tee shirt. It's just now worn in, almost transparent.

The Braggin' Rights was the creation of Al "I"ll Prime You to Death" Wilson of the North TX division with help from Augie Skopik of Gulf Coast and Oscar Barerra of S. TX. It was an outgrowth of the Red River Challenge, and interdivisional meet between N TX and OK- intended to create a rivalry and friendships between the divisions. When I stepped down from N TX Div. pres, Al took over and created this tournament. Gym space had gotten nearly impossible to find in Dallas, so we had been creatively hunting empty gyms wherever they were to be found. Calvert was the geographical center of the 3 divisions, and would let us have the gym for free.
The main thing that I remember was it was the day that I finally beat Bob Hurley----- only to loose to John L and not make the finals in foil. Usually, the 3 weapon trophies were fought over by Howard Williams, Augie Skopik, Ed Sims, or myself. Ed wasn't there, I don't have a clue why Howard wasn't a threat that day, but nobody had really paid much attention to John--- after all, he was only a foil fencer ;D ! But after making up a good deal of ground on the favorites the second day, he came way too close to winning the over all three weapon award. Thank goodness for a strong sabre pool to put some distance between those of us that were strong sabre fencers and those just picking it up just for fun. In those days of full fleche, running attack sabre, it was hard to crossover successfully from foil-- sabre was its own bizarre game. I also remember that was the day that my brother Dennie tried to win a sabre tournament without ever attacking. He beat Norm Issa, lost to me, I lost to Norm. Dennie had won every bout but one and had not attacked once. It was true that the students of Bill Towry at DFC took pride in our defense, but no attacks at all was too much of a handicap. In the 3 way barrage, Norm took first (his first victory over Dennie or me), I was second and Dennie was third.
I just went out to the garage to look through the trophies, and there in the corner was the Braggin' Rights trophy. The rings started the next year, but I can proudly brag about winning the first Braggin' Rights 3 WPN Award.

Braggin' Rights was one of my first tournaments. It was where I received the sage advice to consider epee rather than foil as my natural weapon.
Thanks, Luz for the pic of the tee shirt. I'm not sure where mine got off to, so your's was a nice memory boost.
