I fenced with what was then a varsity Southwest Conferece sport at Rice coached by Harold VanBuskirk from 1953 to 1956. At one of our first meets under Mr. Van at A&M, I was entered in Novice Sabre and wearing a very "raty" old jacket with some small holes in it. During on of the matches, my Aggie opponent extended his sabre and started running at me in a "flace" attack. I failed to parry and his sabre blade entered into a hole near the base of my neck and exited our the jacket on the other side of the back of my neck. My opponent was so shocked that he let loose of the sabre and left it dangling thru my jacket..which from the front looked like it went in one side of my neck and came out the other. Fortunately it had just scraped the back of my neck but it was an amusing sight. It so unnerved my opponent that he promptly lost the match.

I'm with D, that was an excellent story!
(and how wonderful to have a true Van Buskirk alum to share with us).

Hope you share other stories. You predate me. I love being the whipper snapper. Thanks.
