Since yesterday was the birthday of Alexandre Dumas and I actually knew about it in advance (thanks, schlager7), I stopped by my local Barnes & Noble this week and picked up a copy of the Three Musketeers, which I had not read since I was 16.
I timed my reading so I would finish it on Thursday for his birthday. It was very enjoyable to re-read the piece with adult eyes. It is really hardly the piece of "juvenile" fiction that most think it.
I suspect, over the many years since Dumas wrote this book, it has probably been responsible (including via film adaptations) for more people taking up fencing than any other single book.
Ah, glass of wine and some old friends, even if fictional...

There IS a reason it's a classic.

July 24th fell on a Thursday this year and that is one of our regular fencing nights at the Clear Lake Fencing Club.
In honor of M. Dumas, we held an intra-salle 1-touch epee competition (pools & DEs).
We had exactly 16 competitors (2 pools of 8 and a DE table of 16 - no Byes). How sweet is that?
I am please to announce that (of all people) our foil coach, Damian Berntsen, won the event. The prize was a small, framed print of Jerome's The Duel After the Masquerade.

Why am I amused that the foil coach won a 1-touch epee competition? Whoever you are Damian, congratulations. I presume this is the print.
