Now if someone could develop an inexpensive, but practical reel (other than a bungee system)...

Looks exactly like the elipse boxes.... I like those. They ran on batteries too.. but i thought they were cheaper than these....?? I got my Eclipse box (the one I leave at the Salle) used for $250. It has the newest chip and it runs on AC or DC. It isn't very loud, but it works when the power fails (which it has proved outside a dark gym on the sidewalk), and whatever else happens (like being knocked off the table to the floor), it always keeps working. What makes this new box any better?

Hello, I am the designer of the reflex scoring machine and the owner of SIYON Electronics (I am also new on this forum). For those of you who are wondering "what makes this box different," the answer is simple. Price. At its introductory selling price of $199, the reflex is, as far as I know, the cheapest machine in the world. The reflex is also a very reliable machine that dose not sacrifice quality for low cost. The cost of the reflex is kept low not by outsourcing manufacturing to China or sacrificing quality but by doing all manufacturing myself. As for the firefly machine, with all due respect, I don't think it can compete with the reflex. It costs more at $240 and looks like it would be prone to breaking. The reflex is most similar to the Eclipse box as some of you have mentioned (although I like the lights on the reflex better). At the reflex's price f $199, it is $175 CHEAPER than the Eclipse! At $199.00 for a scorebox, that will be a major boost for the smaller clubs.
I know that here in the Gulf Coast Division the big four clubs get the press, but we have almost a dozen small clubs who could really benefit from something cheap enough that an individual fencer might even be able to buy their own.
(I'm with Aldo on the hope that someone could develop an inexpensive, non-bungee reel system to go with it.)

The reflex is now available for purchase. I am currently accepting check and money orders (can't predict when credit card processing will be available). For the details; www.siyonelectronics.com
