Michael Jordan’s shoe launch party last week revealed that the new Air Jordan is apparently based on the sport of fencing! Multiple websites and media that attended the event reported that Michael Jordan felt there was a strong connection between basketball and fencing.
The website www.complex.com/blogs/2009/01/09/photos-michael-jordan-unveils-the-jordan-2009/ reported that in an interview Jordan’s team said the shoe, “incorporates inspiration from a number of things, with a surprising focus on the defense and striking tactics used in the sport Fencing.”
From the website www.nitrolicious.com/blog/2009/01/08/michael-jordan-april-holmes-unveil-the-air-jordan-2009:
In a session between Michael Jordan and Jason Mayden, both agree that the art of Fencing can be compared to the battle on the court where both types of athletes require quick moves, quick attacks and quick defense to win. The sneakers take note from the the uniform of Fencing while the technology is inspired by both the art of fencing and basketball.
Now, I don’t know if this is myth or reality, but I heard a story that the fencing coach at UNC, Ron Miller, once gave Jordan a fencing lesson in his freshmen year and that not only did he love it, but said that if basketball didn’t work out that he would come out for the fencing team! Can you imagine Jordan fencing? I think he might have easily won a few gold medals by now! Maybe there is still time to get him into fencing?
Michael: If you’re out there reading this! You’ve done basketball and tried baseball, but maybe you should have done fencing…come fence! Go for the gold in London!
This is great for fencing to get such validation from one of the greatest athletes of all time! Also, seems like a great opportunity if someone could get in touch with him…
