Dear Veteran Fencers,
I just updated the SVCC points in AskFred for the 2008-9 season. We had a total of 4 tournaments and very good attendance. Every year, we pick 3-4 fencers while losing 1-2. There were a total of: 11 Female and 34 Male Veteran Fencers participating in the Southwest Region Veteran Circuit Cup. Two women and 13 male fencers participated in at least 2 events of the circuit.
We had agreed at the Fete de Luna last year about the SVCC rules for this year. For example, points to be given only to the top 75% of the field (or at least win a DE unless 4 or less). I can not change them half-way through the season. At this point, I would like to open the rules of SVCC for debate.
Three comments that I received were:
1) to award points to all competitors.
2) for 2009-10 continue the points by place (rather than number of competitors) for the Male weapons.
3) to award points based on number of competitors for the women events. This is because single gender events carry unusual more weight than when Women compete in Open events (as shown in each weapon). The triple weapon rankings already use that formula (by # competitors). The alternative choice is to reward the highest placement with equivalent of 1st place (i.e. 1000 points), then next female fencer in mixed event (etc.) That would require also changes to the male points in mixed events... becoming more complicated than Askfred can currently host.
I hate to use different point systems for each gender, but until we have enough Veteran women competing that we can separate every event by gender, we might need to do that.
Another comment (this one by me), is that I hope that the SVCC becomes a path for qualification for Summer Nationals. Perhaps, attendance to 1 or 2 regional veteran circuit events allows you to qualify for that particular weapon. I asked Augie, our Southwest circuit representative to discuss this idea at the BOD.
Please send me your comments. I will make a composite list of emails of veteran fencers who have participated, and we will call a vote.
