Here in the Gulf Coast Division we will soon have a meeting to organize our tournament schedule for the 2010-2011 season. As a member of the EC of two fencing clubs (GFC & CLFC) I naturally have to try to avoid scheduling on a date opposite an SSCC.
If one of my clubs DOES schedule on a date and the SSCC claims that date for one of its own, my tournament is either de-sanctioned (i.e., no letter classifications may be issued) or cancelled. SO it is very important to me to know the SSCC dates for 2010-2011 ASAP (allowing the circuit even occurs in the 2010-2011 season).
to that end I contacted the SW Section Chair, Allan Curry, who responded:
Thanks for your e-mail, and I appreciate your efforts to avoid stepping on the SSCC events. I’m not sure that everyone knows that the officers of the Southwest Section USFA are not the individuals responsible for holding or scheduling the Southwest Section Circuit Cup events. This is the responsibility of an entirely separate committee which we have no control over. Currently this is chaired by Jamie Alshire and the incoming chair is Justin Meehan.
Yours is not the first e-mail on this subject, and from the small amount of email traffic I have seen it does not appear that the SSCC Committee will be setting up any events for this coming year. However I would confirm with Jamie or Justin that this is the case and if you have additional questions regarding the status of the SSCC they may be able to provide you answers.
Allan Curry
A response was then received from SSCC Chair Ailshire:
A motion was made during the SWS Membership meeting
(www.southwestfencing.org/Archive/archive.html contains a link to the relevant minutes) to discontinue the SSCC as a body and throw the section's support to the ROC program. To that I end, I have been wrapping up loose ends rather than planning a 10-11 year SSCC series.
Confirmation that this decision has worked its way through the SWS EC is pending from our Chair Allan Curry (so you inadvertently addressed your message correctly anyway!) and I hope to hear soon. I do not anticipate finding out and being able to communicate the decision effectively enough to handle your rotation in advance of your division's annual scheduling meeting.
I will make it a point to let you know as soon as I hear anything to the point. Thanks!
Regards,
Jaimie Ailshire
