Columbus Day Demo October 11th / from 10am - 2pm
Once again, the museum is hosting a Columbus Day celebration and we've been invited to show off how darned good we look! This has always been a very good opportunity for us to recruit new members and we get to fight / hangout on the Columbus ships to boot!
So, write this in on your calenders, because it's always lots of fun and (bonus) there's free food involved! Bring your best garb and be awesome! (15th Century period garb would be best, if you have it.) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Night at the Museum October 30th / from 7pm -10pm
This is not entirely SCA oriented but it's really cool to do. Dress in costumes that go with different exhibits as the Curator leads troops of Girl Scouts through a flashlight tour of the museum. For example dress as a cowboy in the western display.

Passing along from the Yahoo Group...
With a gentleman having shown up these last two Practices, I suppose I should explain how he learned of the SCA. For those of you that I hadn't told, a new History Club was started at Texas A&M Corpus this semester, which I am a member of. Three of the officers are also fellow classmates of mine and so they heard about me being in the SCA. During one of their officer meetings a few weeks ago, they thought it would be cool to have me give a presentation on the SCA at the next meeting; which was held on the Thursday night before Gulf Wars. I enthusiastically agreed and vigorously began making a Power Point presentation to aid me in the presentation. During the two weeks leading up the my presentation, the officers had advertised it as a special presentation given by a Medieval Mystery Man and many of my classmates who are in the club kept asking the officers who this person was or voicing their guesses. This was getting exciting. That Thursday night, I sat in the meeting until about ten minutes before I was suppose to give the presentation. I then went to my truck and put on my chainmail shirt, surcoat and took a rattan sword, a boffer sword, and a Combat arrow. To add to the suspense, I also put on my old Great Helm so my face was hidden. I stood outside the door to the room until they were ready and then marched in. Gasps filled the room and they were all wide-eyed, waiting for me to begin. I placed the weapons on the table in front of me and then looked around the room; I would think they were reminded of Darth Vader at that moment. I took off the helmet and greeted them. I then began the presentation. I will have to post the Power Point presentation so you can all see it, but they were thoroughly impressed. One of my teachers was at the meeting and he complemented my on the Power Point and showmanship of my presentation. Even when some of us went to dinner after the meeting they were all complementing me on the presentation. One girl even requested a that I make her a chainmail shirt. After the presentation, I handed out some fliers and told them to please come and check us out sometime. One of the officers took photos and has posted them on the History Club's Facebook page, as well as the links to the Society, Kingdom, and Shire's websites. Here is the cool part. The gentleman who has shown up the last two week is not actually a member of the Club. A few minutes into the meeting, he entered and asked "Is this where the Medieval Mystery Man is presenting?" Talking with him after the meeting, he mentioned that he was a member of a Fencing Club (I think he said is was at Tx A&M) and said that he knew some of his fellow members would love to come do Rapier, but they would probably also want to try Chivalric too. Sorry for the long-winded story, but I had to explain the whole thing. Not to brag, but I think I did a pretty good job. Hopefully we get a few more new people to show up at future Practices. Owen

Just to let everyone know we're planning to hold a rapier practice on Sunday at 6:30 PM at the Watergardens alongside the Chivalric fighters. If you've any interest in rapier combat, please make plans to attend!
Don't forget to bring water.

Passing this announcement along for my friends in Corpus Christi:
Just to remind everyone, we are having our first attempt at our once-a-month special Fighter Practice/demo this month, April the 27th, at Cole Park starting at noon.
Also, I would like to ask that we begin discussing locations for the one in May and on what day we want to hold it so we can let everyone (SCA and perhaps mundane) know as early as this month's FP/D. I'm sure we don't want to have the next one on the next weekend (May 4th). Here is the May event schedule for Ansteorra;
2-4 Loch Soilleir Spring Event - Loch Soilleir (Clear Lake, TX) *PED* Beltane and Royal Huntsman - Namron (Norman, OK) 9-11 Queen's Champion - Steppes (Dallas, TX) 16-18 Castellan - Northkeep (Tulsa, OK) *PED* Guardian of the Tor - Dragonsfire Tor (Stephenville, TX) *PED* 23-25 Steppes Warlord - Steppes (Dallas, TX) *PED* 30-1 Eldern Baronial - Eldern Hills (Lawton, OK) There is also a possibility that we will be doing a demo for the showing of Spamalot at the Harbor Playhouse which begins in May, so that might also limit our potential weekends.
As for locations, it is preferable to find places that are populated during the weekends (especially Sundays) and this may or may not be a good idea, but perhaps also some neighborhood park, especially near a school.
In service to the Shire, Kingdom, and Society,
Lord Owen Longstrider Seawinds Hospitaler
