I would like to introduce the newest member of the South Texas Division of the USFA, ACE Academy Fencing Club. The club fencers will be competing at there first competition (The Empire Open ) at Rice on May 21st and 22nd. Here come a bunch of kids who are very excited to be joining the world of fencing! I hope to see plenty of good competition there.

My sons (now 14 and 10) began fencing at the ripe old age of 5.5. Have they gotten hurt? Yes..mostly bruises. I have always said fencers can often look like dalmations. This is particularly true at earlier ages because the point control is just not as good as in those who have more experience. Any other injuries beyond the weird flukes that can happen to anyone, anywhere, seem to happen to/by those who are not being careful...someone waving a blade around or walking with the tip out, turning the back of the head to their opponent. Stuff like that. At TFA, the coaches and parents of long time fencers are vigilant about safety violations and we call them out. Safety violations earn you push-ups. This makes you stronger, thus a better fencer, and hopefully, will serve as a reminder not to do that again. As for, "Will a kid like fencing?"...at TFA, we allow 2 free nights to see if it will work out for a person. I think most clubs allow a grace period, but I couldn't swear to that. All you can do is try it out and see if your child is into it. Good luck!
