Two of San Jac's very own students qualified to participate in the Junior Olympics. Paden Hilborn and Martin Rodriguez have competed in the fencing tournament the past weekend. Hilborn competed in the Men's sabre and Rodriguez competed in Men's foil. Both events were in Memphis, Tenn.
Paden Hilborn has been fencing for a little over a year now and has achieved the honor of going on to the Junior Olympics. He said that he was able to accomplish this this feat because he used to watch and spar with his brother. He has studied the disciplines in sabre and foil. He is beginning to study the epée style. His event was on February 12th and ranked 129 of 157 competitors.
Martin Rodriguez competed in Men's foil on February 14th. He was ranked 75th out of 205 competitors He started fencing in high school and has moved on to his competition. He teaches students at Queens Intermediate how to fence twice a week. He is studying marine biology and completing his basic studies.
These two students practice fencing at the Clear Lake Fencing Club, which meets on Wednesdays and Thursdays. This club has classes that teach the basics of the sport and allows fencers to practice during the week. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
