I thought it worth reporting in this thread on the National Wheelchair Championships.
Wheelchair fencing this weekend
Here is the long awaited (or not) report from the wheelchair National Championships. I think I might have walked too much on Friday when I got in. (yes I am one of the lucky one who can walk a short distance) Over to the convention center and then to find a store near the hotel to get water to drink at the tournament and distilled water for my CPAP machine. Water is heavy.
I had an interesting ride on the train to the hotel. This woman was there with her daughter (who was fencing this weekend too,) she noticed my fencing bag and wheelchair and so we started talking. She tells me about a brain tumor her husband had removed and even has a picture of his x-ray on her phone and shows it to me. So I said, “Oh, yeah? Oh yeah? Well I’ll see your tumor and raise you 2 aneurysms.” Then we talk about some of the after effects he is having and I gave her the name of a couple great books about people who have had tumors. Things for both survivors and caregivers. I told her to look at the California Brain Injury Foundation page and find a local chapter in Orange County. (where they live) I hope she does because they could really use the services. I wish I had used them earlier.
Saturday morning I could feel the effects of the walking and was a bit sore. I tell you, these 20 year olds are fast. I actually fenced better than I felt and the workout was great. But I made some of the same stupid mistakes I usually do and hung my arm and exposed my forearm and elbow. Technicolor arm coming soon. However, I do have to stop using head parries. Not only is it loud, my neuro is not fond of them. So I ended up medaling at 5th place.
Sunday was another story. I fenced foil. Some of the same mistakes here as well. I get caught up watching some parries and congratulating myself on them and I fail to riposte. I also need to finish my attacks. I was also having the same issue with making my disengages etc too big. Being a second or two behind hurts too. The ref says, “fence” and it’s like a 3 count before I start, and the other guy is already moving.
The highlight was fencing one of the Paralympians and beating him. Of course I must of made him angry because he beat me 5-0 in the next pool. I ended up fencing him to see who went to the finals and lost. So I took 3rd. and medaled again. Great people, fun despite beating myself.

schlager7: A lot of clubs won't go younger than 10 or 12, but a few take students as young as 7. (I know because there are competitions for youth 8 & under at some tournaments).
