There's a new club in Surfside: thefacts.com/news/article_a1927610-e32f-11e0-b46f-001cc4c03286.htmlThe paper is subscription firewalled so you only get the first sentence, which is pretty appalling, but the rest was actually a nice article. Bport got a mention too, which was nice. I went down and met Adam last night. Good guy, really nice place, good fish tacos. Some of you may know him (Adam DeVaney) from New Orleans. He was a B foilist a while back and coached a bit in NO and Florida. So we had a good time and fenced in the open bar under the restaurant, nice kids, nice place, excellent sea breeze, tremendous ambiance for a saber club. I think the salt air is a little hard on equipment. He may want to work up a Pirate Biathlon in the spring to go with the annual Pirate Festival they have. Pirate's Alley is right on the beach, so we could fence (dry saber, I presume) on the sand, then sail out and back around some mark or something. I'm determined to make this happen before I die. Anyway, if you're near Surfside give him a call, drop in for some good food and hang out and fence a bit. Kevin

Galveston, then Corpus Christi, now Surfside...
If I wait long enough maybe a club will open near me!

Galveston, then Corpus Christi, now Surfside... If I wait long enough maybe a club will open near me! OR... YOU, for once in your miserable, negative life, could take some initiative and do something to make it happen. Enough of the rest of the forum members have! It's your turn!

I'm not sure what I did to generate THAT response. I don't think I've been particularly negative. I have made it up to Houston and San Antonio at different times to catch some of the begger tournaments (admittedly, I was in those towns for other reasons).
Over a lifetime (suffice it that I'm in my early 70s) I've been a member of six different clubs in four states. I think I have done my part and would put in a weekly appearance if there was a club near me.
I enjoy the rather sleepy life in Port Lavaca and doing far more fishing and boating than I ever thought I'd have time for. I DO, however, enjoy this forum and keeping up with fencing that is somewhat local to me.
I don't think my posts have been particularly negative. Whistful, perhaps, to have it all, including a fencing club in my current home. At my age, however, I don't think I have it in me to organize a new venture.

Just to buck the threadrift and refocus, I've got an old dry sabre from back in the day (before I settled down to one weapon). They look like a small start up group. I'd be happy to ship it to the group in Surfside?

I was thinking I'd been "Nemoed" again. You've been nothing but nice. It was late, I'd been refing all weekend, and set up and took down a tournament. The next one is in two weeks... and I'm already working on that one. I need some sleep! I apologize once more!

The restaurant is Pirate's Alley: piratesalleytx.com/There's a contact page there, shoot a mail to Adam and ask him about dropping by. I'm sure he could use some equipment, he was saying he was going to order some stuff here soon. K O'N
