UH in San Marcos? ?? Why is that so strange to you, Nemo? We had to have a gym. And the ball sports always get first pick. I just happened to know someone & got us an open space for a host team to use. That was the problem for all the other clubs... "no space, the gym's taken". So we're gonnna have a SWIFA. Wherever. Plus, a lot of their kids will see fencing for the first time. And, the school officials at the Academy want to start a fencing class. They are excited to have us there to show their kids! That's how we grow the next generation. It's all good! And, anyway, what does it matter to you? You aren't collegiate. What's your stake in this other than being negative, as usual?

I agree. The host is not the building. U of H would still have to be the organizer. In Houston how many clubs other than Bayou City have used the facility in Meyer Park? Answer: several. Even the Galveston club held a tournament there. Granted, the degree (geographically) is larger, but I don't see how it changes anything.
Sponsorship, organization and physical structures are not the same things.

How does this play out with the SWIFA rotation. Does this mean that UNT is next in the rotation?
Anyway, it's interesting that FCUH is hosting two tournaments on the same weekend in two different locations.

Anyway, it's interesting that FCUH is hosting two tournaments on the same weekend in two different locations. UNT has first option to host SWIFA #2, or they can pass or take the option to "step back" and let A&M host it, and then host #3. Alliance and HAFC have tournaments on October 15. Not U of H. That's one of the reasons why I asked the Academy for that date; no conflicting tournaments at SWIFA schools. Please pass the popcorn.

I was confusing HAFC with FCUH since I had heard about the tournament from Davis. (but Davis should've already graduated by now anyway?) *passes popcorn*

What else do we need to do on our end? Please advise since this is all new to us... Grace: Please pre-register your squads on FRED. There is also more information there. askfred.net/Events/moreInfo.php?tournament_id=16509Please try to bring one full working strip (scoring machine, floor cords, reels, extension cord). This is the standard for all the teams, but we make exceptions for new teams who may not have it. We will have extra equipment there. Have your team show up at the San Marcos Academy gym at 8:00 a.m. Saturday to sign in. They will have to designate the A, B, and C fencers, as well as any alternate for each squad. Have them go to mask check. I will call a meeting of the existing member teams at registration to officially vote the Islanders into the conference. This is merely a formality and procedural requirement. Don't worry, the other teams are eager to have them. After they are voted in, pay the dues for membership. $350 for the entire season. Have your fencers start to warm up and get ready to fence. Don't worry, the other fencers and the staff will help lead your fencers through it.

Hello everyone, this is Daniel from Trinity University. We're still having difficulties getting everything set, but it would seem that we will be bringing three teams to the tournament, 2 with an alternate. Can someone please give me a brief overview of how best to let the alternates fence too and what the rules are for switching to an alternate? Also, this is the first time we have had so many people go to a tournament and are not able to order underarm protection in time for this first tournament. We have only have 7 at the moment. Do any of the teams have extra underarm protection they would be able to share for the tournament?

Daniel: What you are looking for is in the Comps Manual: Section 6. Definitions: f. Alternate Fencer: The fourth member of a squad who is not designated as the “A”, “B”, or “C” fencer. The Alternate Fencer may be substituted at any time for a designated fencer who is injured. The Alternate Fencer may be substituted for a designated fencer by the Squad Captain if it is announced to the referee one full bout in advance. The Alternate Fencer must remain in the rotation for the duration of the encounter.
g. Squad Captain: The fencer who is the representative of the squad and who must designate the fencing order of the fencers, make substitutions, and sign the score sheet at the end of each encounter. The Squad Captain is the only member of a squad allowed to address the referee other than the fencer currently on strip.
How many plastrons do you need? I can probably have enough there for you.

Thanks for the response. We have 11 people going to the tournament, 1 team for each weapon and an alternate for our foil and epee teams. (I'll probably go as one of our alternates myself). We have only 7 underarm protectors at them moment, though I plan on buying my own there, so we should only be short 3. I'm hoping others might buy their own too. Any help would definitely be appreciated though. Looking forward to the tournament. Trinity should be arriving just before 8am.

Kudos to the organizers of this tourney! Islanders had a great time & learned a lot! Special thanks should really go to the San Marcos Academy for letting us use their gym. The Texas State F.C. also deserves a big hand for doing a lot of the set up & take down helping U of H host a competition so far from home. The Islanders looked pretty scared coming to a SWIFA for the first time, but after they were unanimously voted into the conference, finding that they were welcome to play with us, and winning some bouts, they were all smiles, had a lot of fun, and are looking forward to the next round at #2.
