Just a quick question about the scheduling of this. Is it still scheduled for Nov 4 at FIT?
I ask because it is the same weekend of the "Big D" being held by Cutting Edge.

Can either yourself or Kyle go rattle their cage and see what's up? I'd hate for them to ask to host a tournament, forget to send their check, and forget about the tournament.

At the risk of being thought of as nosy (not that that ever stopped me before), which schools are currently SWIFA members?

Our By-Laws say they must pay by November 1 or they can't compete for the season. (Article 3, b, Section 5.) I interpret that to mean they also cannot host a tournament for the season. home.austin.rr.com/swifa/Info/bylaws.htm

So if there's no check in the next 5 days, what's the backup plan for hosting?

Good question. We had discussed it at our officer's meeting earlier in the month and I believe that the official answer is to go down the rotation order, but that might be kinda hard seeing as it would be so close.

Just got this e-mail:
SWIFA Representatives:
The UNT Fencing Club has submitted their SWIFA invoice for payment. The purchase order was submitted to our purchasing department on 10/5/06. I am told that the payments for getting a check cut are taking a little over a month after they are submitted to the purchasing department. You should receive the payment sometime in early November. I apologize for the delay, I assure you that the payment is being processed and we will get it out to you as soon as possible. The wheels of a university can turn very slowly at times. Please feel free to contact me at (940) 565-2954 with any questions. -Billy

Well, two options that spring to mind is that either an escalation needs to be created, or the UNT team come up with a bond of some sort to be held by SWIFA until their check clears.

If the school says the check is coming, the check is coming. Accept it and move on.

Actually, Damaris sent them an invoice much earlier. This was a later invoice I sent. The 10/5 date is when they got it to their purchasing department. I have since been in touch with their Sports Clubs Director and the purchasing department to give them SWIFA's EIN so they could process the payment. This was just a screw up because of the new system. I don't expect it to happen again.

Y'all will have to tell us how things went! Can't be there AGAIN due to school things. Sucks...I wanna go play... Some good; some very, very bad. The PEB is a nice facility. It was easy to get to, there is good lighting and AC, ample and close-by parking, it was clean, and it has locker rooms with hot showers. UNT had enough equipment to run the meet. Ovy Waddops was brought in and he brought a lot of North Texas Division equipment and served as the armorer all day. The UNT kids all worked very hard to keep everything running smoothly. We (the SWIFA organization) probably need to do a better job of pushing everyone to use FRED to preregister and maybe even make it mandatory. There were a lot more people there than were posted on the FRED site, which caused some problems. One team arrived at 9:30 because they thought the registration closed at 10:00. It was posted correctly on FRED at 9:00. Another reason to make FRED preregistration mandatory. Then, two referees canceled just last night and two more just didn't show up this morning, which delayed everything and left them short-handed all day! (There are four new openings for referees with SWIFA!) Trevor scrambled to get some replacements, but that slowed everything up. I was there to get some feedback on how SWIFA was working and to coach the Texas State kids, but was impressed into referee duty, so I saw this all first-hand. When there was a seeding problem because a referee entered the indicators wrong (differently, really), it became apparent that the meet was going to run long, Trevor asked the Rec Sports worker there if they could have the gym a little longer. He was told he had to call a supervisor. When she finally arrived, she said she didn't have that authority. Rec Sports closes their facilities at 6:30. They call UNT police if they aren't vacated by 7:00. I am quite certain there is someone with that authority, but they are not available at that hour on a Saturday evening. It was suggested that we could make the bouts shorter or make them one touch bouts. Ultimately, the group consensus was to have a SWIFA 2.5 at a later date to pick up where we left off with the Semi-Finals in Epee and Foil. And, Yes, we are very well aware that it is not a happy thing... for anyone... Sabre finished before Epee and Foil. I don't have the scores, but the final results are: 1. Texas State 2. UT #2 3T. TAMU 3T. U of H I had a good time with the kids, it was a good meet, and I think UNT and Trevor did a very good job with it, but you just can't control hurricanes, earthquakes, or Rec Sports. We live, we learn, and we try to do better next time.

That's too bad, guys. Keep us aprised as to when/where SWIFA 2.5 will be. School conflicts screwed me AGAIN this time. I, again, will do my best to come to SWIFA 2.5 and 3. If I'm there, I'll definitely referee. I really feel bad that y'all were short referees and I didn't go. Let me know if I can do anything from here!
