Hi guys, I've recently took up a huge intrest in fencing/ kendo here in laredo tx. I have no experience in the any field. & THE PROBLEM IS! There are no instructors for nether category. I mean what type of way could I find a private coach in the area or something of the sort? I just want to learn I've made a deliberate effort to search online, I even put an ad up. Anyone have suggestions? P.S I can't travel 200-100 miles out for a club. I'm not old enough to drive

Sadly, I don't have much. Let me just quote a post that replied to someone asking the same question some years back (2003) on another forum (Fencing.Net): Let me add that I have never had contact with the referenced Rio Grande Fencing Club. The UTPA Impalers are, AFAIK, defunct. The Noble Paladins still have a Yahoo Group. There seems to be no action there, but the ability to contact a former member that way might be helpful (perhaps one or more of them have since relocated to Laredo.) The fellow who taught the Noble Paladins back when, Vernon Dixon, lives in La Feria, which I realize is still not close. What I DID notice in my search was a reference to a fencing club at J. W. Nixon High School in Laredo on the school's Wikipedia entry. Here is a link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._W._Nixon_High_SchoolLook under the section titled "Extracurricular activities and sports" Failing that, what you may need to find is not so much an current fencing club, but people in your community who used to fence (high school, college or when they lived elsewhere) and might be interested in getting back into the game, at least recreationally. Keep looking and let us know what you find.

Thank you for responding! I did read that post from the other forum, but I still had a tinge of hope maybe I would get a different response 10 years later haha. I currently actually attend Nixon High school, I'm a freshman and I can tell you they haven't had a fencing club for quite some time. Tomorrow I will inquire more on the subject with my counselor or athletic department. Maybe posting an ad or something on the newspaper will gather some attention community wise. Again thank you for your support! I will keep you all informed!

Oh and another thing! The forum posted by AB sutton back in 2003 probably means he's still here in laredo. (having said he would live permanently) Although their is no contact Information provided on his profile, and his last post was in 2003.

Just FWIW to anyone else reading this thread, I can report that, after speaking with the "AB Sutton" from the old Fencing Net posts, he has met with Tory and her friends and will begin teaching them fencing, while he seeks opportunities to expand his own education (sabre has particularly changed since he fenced it, pre-electric era). I am sure all sorts of things will come up and I have offered such aid and info as I can provide.
The thesis statement, though, is, "We have a fencing club in Laredo, TX ladies and gentlemen."

Looks like there was more interest in fencing down Laredo way than one might have thought. Wishing them luck with getting their club organized.

Hello,
Just found this forum. I fenced in college and am planning to move back to Laredo in July. I was hoping to get back in it. If things go as planned I would like to participate as much as I am able. Just wanted to see if things have progressed. I will keep checking out the forum in hopes I can join at some point.

Hi IGuerra, I'm sure by this time the club should be doing well, it's in it's starting stages at the moment. You can email me at tory25764@yahoo.com I can keep you updated if you want to know further information. We practice once a week at the moment.

Hi, I don't know if this blog is still active two years down the line but I am interested in joining if possible. I took a lesson several years back and absolutely loved it. I haven't found a group in town yet but hope it is due to the fact I suck at searching.
