What planet does the FIE, the SEMI comission, and Presdent Roch come from?
The problem I have with all these SEMI commission proposals is this: “What does any of this have to do with helping the fencers, and what does it do to grow the sport of fencing?
Nil, nothing, none, and nada... zip, zilch, zed, and zero!
I could understand putting your national colors on your leg, and I could understand putting your name on the back of your jacket or on your leg... I could even understand why we reversed the score to reflect the idea of a touch for instead of a touch against! That actually seemed to make some sort of sense in a world were you route for the team or a favorite player and all the “major” sports score it that way. I can understand this even in a sport so steeped in tradition as ours. Even though the single thing that the general public instantly recognizes as being a fencer is someone in an all white uniform and dark mesh mask!
So, why is it that every current FIE proposal to “improve” fencing actually seems to hurt our sport, and dumb it down! Is fencing to be “physical chess” or “physical checkers” now?
A few shining examples of the brilliance of the SEMI’s recommendations:
Proposition 3 Reincorporate the bib as valid surface at foil.
Duhhh..... Wouldn’t it be easier and cheaper to just leave the target area alone and have the referee call an off target due to covering and issue a card?
Proposition 4 To add to the article t5.7 : At foil, during the bout (between the orders ON GUARD and HALT), the arm, forearm and unarmed hand must never stand in front of the chest.
Duhhh..... Again, wouldn’t it be easier and cheaper to just have the referee call an off target due to covering and issue a card?
Proposition 6. Suppression of the lighting of the white lamp at foil : adopt the conclusions of the ad-hoc Commission in respect of the suppression of the non-valid surface at foil.
Duhhh...... On target, off target. Really difficult stuff to understand! Are we fencing for Homer Simpson now?
Proposition 18 :
At foil, make the hit to the unarmed arm valid and carry out tests in considering the armed arm as a valid surface. “This proposition is based on the fact that fencers have more and more incorrect on guard positions and leave the unarmed arm pending in front of the valid surfaces.”
Duhhh..... Wouldn’t it be easier and cheaper to just have the referee call an off target due to covering and issue a card rather than turning the foil target area into sabre target?
Proposition 1 : 4
Rules Specific to Sabre
(page 17) c) Conductive Jacket – This title is changed for c) Conductive Jacket and conductive T-Shirt.
Oh, and won’t this be a joy??? Let’s add another layer of lame! As if fencing Sabre weren’t miserable enough as it is!
1. Wireless fencing (epee, foil, sabre) Status of the wireless systems: At the 2005 FIE General Assembly, which was held in Linz before the Junior World Championships (22 March 2005) Mr. Frédéric MARCIANO, in liaison with the SEMI, made a demonstration of his wireless system at epee (with conductive jacket, gloves and breeches) and half transparent mask (this mask is transparent from the mouth and up, and is more appropriate at foil). In this system, the registering of the hit is reversed (the light is lit on the mask of the hit person). This demonstration interested many representatives of the nations present.
How nice of the FIE to change the target area (Lexan masks don’t register a hit; Gotta wear booties or no more toe touches), and make Epee the most unbearable weapon of all to fence. “Fencing in a full-body-condom!” Thanks for that one, Geezer! Couldn’t have said it better myself! Oh, and let’s not forget that we’ll need mask cords now, and probably knickers cords as well now. Will we also need a pair of booties-cords?
2. Transparent mask
The mask with transparent visor can be used at foil, epee and sabre. But if the mask becomes totally transparent, it will be appropriate at foil but no longer at epee, because of its slippery surface. If sole the visor is transparent, there is no problem neither at foil nor at epee.
The mask is TARGET AREA in Epee and Sabre... Idiots!!! Of course it’s a problem!!!
“President Roch joined the meeting briefly. Defoligny-Rayaume questioned him on the Commission’s concerns about transparent mask safety. President Roch replied that transparent masks cost less than other FIE masks, that the problem of safety is not the visor but rather the use of orthopedic grips, and that newer model transparent masks currently under development will be better.”
(O.K., now we’ve established that President Roch was there briefly, to weigh in with his two cents worth on prospective technology that does not currently exist, and to prove to us that he doesn’t have any idea what a Lexan mask costs! Now prove to us that you aren’t a complete moron, President Roch.. With that kind of logic, I’m sure you’ll be successful! It also appears that safety is not really a concern of the FIE!)
Come on, President Roch, admit it; it’s really just easier for the FIE to quit carrying around those metal strips isn’t it? Better to suffocate a bunch of fencers, or maybe kill a few while we wait for those new masks that don’t yet exist get developed!
Excuse me. Gotta go throw up now! Then I think I'll go watch the Texas Legislature at work. It'll leave a better taste in my mouth!
