I just wanted to wish the fencers at Texas A&M a Happy 100th Anniversary of fencing at their college.
The first season with a fencing club was the 1905-1906 season and while that club, like many a college-based club, has gone in and out of existence a few times, they represent the oldest group I've yet discovered in the Gulf Coast Division.
Happy 100th, Aggies!

No, those Aggie boys already had swords. From the first days of A&M's history, the military tradition has been deeply ingrained in this school as a distinguishing element of its character. Ever since the Spanish-American War of 1898 Aggies have served with honor in virtually every conflict in which the United States has been involved. Eight Aggies have been awarded the United States’ highest military award, the Medal of Honor. Over 225 Aggies have become Generals and Admirals. Today, around the world, the men and women of A&M continue their exemplary service in defense of our great nation. class.aggienetwork.com/heavens_11-72/a-m_history.html"Give me an army of West Point grads and I will win a battle, give me a handful of Texas Aggies and I'll win a war." General George S. Patton

If they had one of the first clubs in the area... who did they fence?

Longblade, I love your comment! Sometimes I feel bad about punching out of the Corps of Cadets, because it IS such a large part of Aggie Tradition. 100 years of fencing.. wow! Well, I have no idea who we fenced back then, but it probably wasn't t.u. because the t-sips college wasn't even established until 1883 so I doubt they had a fencing club then. Does anyone even know when they officially formed a club?

21 years after founding sounds like plenty of time to form a fencing club, although I'll admit I don't have any records on the matter.
