We are moving to Edingurg/Mcallen next fall and have a 12 year old daughter who has been fencing for three years. Are there any clubs or schools in the area that offer fencing for her age? Thank you, Miguel

From the Yahoo Group schlager7 noted:
The Noble Paladins is a fencing (sword-play) club for young people and adults, established in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas in 1999. Fencers learn both foil and saber sword skills. The club also demonstrates historical sword skills at local educational and historical events. If you are interested in joining the club and learning to fence, please contact us. We welcome newcomers to the sport! The Club also welcomes local and national Sponsors. Please contact us if you would like us to come share our skills at local and regional festivals and historical events. The Noble Paladin Fencing Club of the RGV newsgroup is a forum for sharing news about the club and for learning more about this historical and modern sport. What is a Paladin? (from Webster's New Universal Unabridged Dictionary): A. Any knightly or heroic companion. B. Any determined advocate or defender of a noble cause.

Actually, the club mentioned in this thread, the Noble Paladins, is pretty much the only club I am aware of in the Rio Grande Valley. They do not have a website, but do have a Yahoo Group. Here is the link: Noble PaladinsRandy Dixon is their coach. His email address is vrdixon ATaol.com Next closest would be the Coastal Bend Fencing Society in Robstown, just outside Corpus Christi. They have a website here: Coastal Bend Fencing Society Their main coach, Tim Kellogg has his email address posted on their website.

I did a Google Map of club practice locations in the Gulf Coast Division. I also included two clubs that exist right on the border of our division. One of those, Noble Paladins, is the closest club/group/school I know of to your area. MAPOther than what is on my map, the next closest fencing organizations to where you are would be in San Antonio.

Alberto:
I got this response in my email. =============================================================================
Unfortunately, this semester, those of us who are long time members of the group have had really unusual college class schedules with night classes etc. So, for this semester we have been unable to meet, but hopefully next semester (Fall) will work to start up again.

AFAIK, they are currently dormant. I suspect the largest portion of the kids (and, by default, parents) involved in the club have matriculated from school to college or the workaday world. Clubs do that. You can try contacting someone via their Yahoo Group. At least you might reach someone. As to fencing in the McAllen area, let me leave anyone who is hopeful of starting a club in the area with THIS: The Texas Amateur Athletic Federation holds an annual event each year called the Summer Games of Texas. They are held on the last weekend in July. Each city that is awarded the Games, gets to hold them for two years in a row. In 2012 and 2013, that city was Corpus Christi. This year and 2015, the city will be College Station. In 2016 and 2017, that city will be McAllen. MOST years fencing is part of the games. I know fencing has been included in every Summer Games since 2002. That said, it is NOT a given. College Station opted not to hold fencing competitions this year (Don't get me started). Now would be a good time for any current or former members of such a fencing community as may exist (or once existed) in McAllen to contact that city's Parks & Recreation Department about including fencing. While the sport is not a very strong presence (as best as I can tell), there is a new, fairly small club in Laredo, a club based at Texas A&M-Kingsville, one based at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and a non-collegiate club in Corpus Christi called the Coastal Bend Fencing Society. If fencing events are held at the 2016 & 2017 Games, there are enough fencers within driving distance that it might be worthwhile (granted a lot of the college fencers are "back home" during July). It might help spur local interest among kids and their parents. It might also bring a few former fencers out of the woodwork who moved to the area and, finding no club, dropped out of fencing. Here is a link to the contact page for the City of McAllen Parks & Recreation Department: www.teamsideline.com/Org/ContactOrg.aspx?d=q1Nmq%2ftIOQFFJSJ11B3pjg%3d%3d
