Anyone remember this tournament? This was a big deal back when. If my memory is correct, the University of Texas won 9 of the top 10 places in mens foil (the only weapon fenced in this tournament back then).

Southwest Texas State owned this event, and one year they instigated a new rule that no one could fence all three weapons because they were afraid I would tip the scales. I had already won the State three weapon that year and could not fence epee, that I had already won at the state championships.
The Aggies were 2nd or 3rd during my years, but never better. It was based upon points for the top 6 for all weapons. I fenced Rob Stull, Jim Cherry, Oscar, Howard Williams, Robert Reed, etc.
I won my first foil bout versus Robert Reed 5 to (-3) at the Texas Collegiate Fencing Championships in San Marcos. Negative touches were allowed, and he did this powerful lunge, that I parried and hit him on the back with my riposte when he was looking at the box. Yellow card, (1 -0), Replay Red Card (2 to (-1)), Replay Red Card (3 to (-2)), Replay Red Card (4 to (-3)). Replay, but the explanation was my touch ended the process. It was written in the score sheet as 5 - 0 because that was not expected.

Southwest Texas State owned this event, . what year was that? The first Collegate Championship was the first tournament I ever attended. It was in Houston in ~1968 (I think), and an Engineering student named Steve from UT won it that year. He graduated and I never got a chance to knock him off. I won that tournament in 1971 and 1972. Once in Houston and once in Austin. Good memories.
