I would like to take this moment to wish a fond farwell to Scott Brown.
Scott began as a high school fencer in the Clear Lake Fencing Club and followed his fencing dream to become a coach for no less than three fencing organizations, simulataneously: the Clear Lake Fencing Club; the University of St. Thomas Fencing Club; and, Trade of Blades.
Additionally he coached fencers at South Houston High School.
New members of the United Fencing Club (formerly the Clear Lake High School Fencing Club) were required to take his classes at CLFC.
Scott, himself, was coached as a fencer by Michael Mergens, Jerry Dunaway and Richard Alvarez. He progressed as a coach via the annual USFA Coach's College.
He was frequently pressed into service as a director at various Clear Lake, St. Thomas and South Houston tournaments.
Among his more unusal adventures along the way was a class he took in which the final exam consisted of a battle with broadswords from horseback.
There are also vague and whispered rumors involving Scott and a colleague having a frank encounter with fencing weapons of a type not used in USFA competitions. (However, we concede there is no documented proof the encounter ever took place, so you're safe, Scott!)
Scott now moves on to a position teaching fencing in the neighboring Ark-La-Miss Division.
We wish him well and look forward to further instructions one future day, or at least another chance to cross swords.
