As a diversion from the usual fencing tournament, one idea I have played around with in my head was a purely invitational tournament, exclusively reserved for the fencing coaches and instructors.
Naturally it would have to be at a point on the calendar when everyone is not busy gearing up for something like the JOs or the summer Nationals, but it might be fun.
Andrey at epee, Mauro at foils, Augie and Joseph from Katy Blades, Delfina, Oleksii & Dmytro from BCFA, Oliver and Dan from Salle Mauro, etc...
Naturally, none of these events would be large enough for a serious USFA ranking and besides, being a true invitational, it would be ineligible for them anyway.
They could fence any and all weapons that they teach.
We could all help out and cheer on our own coaches.
In time we might attract coaches from the other divisions and it could become quite the social affair. Something to take those tensions down a notch.
Thoughts? Ideas?

May I take that as (some type of) approval?

It's an intriguing thought, but how many would actually show up for it?

You could name the tournament Ragnarök. The final battle at the end of the world to deceide the fate of the Norse Gods.
I would like to see something like this held anually and spread across our Section.

I like Jett's title suggestion: RAGNAROK
So who do we get for what:
Epee... Foil... Sabre...

Oooops!!!!!!!!!!! I had gone back into my post via the "modify" function to change some of the wording when the phone rang and I had to pull up some data from a different application. Instead of just closing the window (which would have left the post as it was) I accidentally clicked "delete." I even clicked "yes" on the "are you sure" box out of reflex... I am obviously not in multi-tasking mode, today. Did I mention it is Monday?

Students of said coaches should cover about all of the rest.
Dan[/quote] Actually, if you go with the notion (already expressed) that it would likely start small, for the first year or two, there should be enough coaches/referees who do not choose to show up to fence who could be coerced into showing up for pay (to referee). It would depend on how much a group was willing to spend. Pricey, but think on it... David Sierra vs Dan Gorman in sabre with Sasha Zucker as referee?

*chuckle* I'm not sure if Dan and I ever crossed blades in competition....
But... Nahh, I'm strictly a referee and a coach these days!

This could be fun. I know a lot of these guys do multiple weapons, but just going with the obvious, what do our pools look like?
Just running with the few I know in the Gulf Coast Division, I get...
FOIL Delfina Perka Joseph Reeve Jerry Dunaway Mauro Hamza
EPEE Andrey Geva Sabina Bazarbayeva August Skopik Steve Moss Bill Trapani
SABRE Oleksii Ivanov Dan Gorman Oliver Diaz
I know I am missing several and I am pretty ignorant of South Texas, North Texas, Louisiana, Ark-La-Miss, etc coaches. Lessee John Moreau - epee, natch. Is Tomasz still in San Antonio? Paul Schimmelman for sabre...
Help me out here, guys...

Tomasz moved out of Texas because the weather was too hot for them.
Some additional STX coaches:
Epee Paul Pesthy John Strass Neil Mittal John Moreau Vinnie Bradford Tracy Hurley Bob Hurley Andrei Samorodov Kyle Maysel Mike Hall Ray Parker Paul Schimmelman
Foil Jose Sanchez Wendell Kubik Curtis Hardy Eric Mallet Emilio Ybarra Ray Parker Alex Ramirez Gary Murray, Sr. Neil Mittal Paul Schimmelman
Saber Gary Van der Wege Grace Atkinson Kyle Maysel Paul Schimmelman Neil Mittal Sasha Zucker Jose Sanchez
These (and those mention before like Paul Schimmelman) are those who I consider coaches. I hope that I am not missing any, and there might be several others (particularly in Foil and Saber). It is truly how you define fencing coach. I coach several cadet and junior Epee fencers during local and national competitions, but I am not giving lessons (there is not much to teach).
Modification due to popular demand!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! I'm very flattered, but not even close to being a master... just a Moniteur. However, if I you make me fence, I'd have to bring along Tim Kellogg, Bob Jones, & Terry Groff for foil, too. In the past 6 months they have done much more coaching than I have, especially Tim. I am amazed at the work Tim has been doing with our youngsters in Corpus. I'll take some photos and share them on the website next week.

Hey- there is a possibility that we could host it at Our Lady of Corpus Christi (a small Catholic College) just a couple of miles from the Bayfront. Anyone for a weekend in Corpus?

Jose,
How about Ray Parker at first glance? I think starting the French young men, Jonathan Parker, Melissa Parker and Kevin Nadeua (sp?) would be a good resume. I know that you have Mike Hall listed, but I remember both of them as competitors and recognize the style influences.
Everyone sees me as an epeeist, but I am just a foil fencer that had to grow up in the Southwest Section so had to fence one-light foil. I will have more foilists as time goes on.

A trip to Corpus Christi could be fun, indeed. Now comes the trick of figuring what part of the seasonal calendar is best suited for drawing a bunch of fencing coaches together. Just a guess, dates right before JOs or Nationals or a NAC are probably not so good.

I'm thinking about going to Nationals this year. How about after that? I'll talk to Paul Craig and see what kind of connections we can make as far as the venue... Oh- and if Kyle (the ghost coach from up north) doesn't fence sabre, I won't either. He and John Moreau taught me sabre too many moons ago to count. He has been out of the epee ciruit a bit lately because of his elbow, BUT have you seen what he has been doing in veteran's sabre? Furthermore, I wonder if we could get John into a sabre lame? You may not realize it, but from what I understand, that was what he fenced before epee...

If you noticed, I placed him as a Foil coach. All four individuals that you talk were very good foil fencers too. In particular, the last 3 of them. Mike Hall was teaching Epee primarily at TFA.

I'm thinking about going to Nationals this year. How about after that? Late July? Sort of a crowning event to end a season with (and well before everyone is too crazed into the next season).

Isn't that when the Games of Texas are usually held?
And aren't ya'll putting the cart before the horse? I've yet to hear a single of these coaches say they WOULD participate!

Last I checked the Games of Texas only cover 1-2 weekends.
More to the point, I contend it is better to start small. Put on something better than just good, and encourage a few more to come each year.
I advocate building slowly, year-by-year.

I think that would be highly appropriate, Saberbob! I like it!Since the word "Ragnarök" (In Norse: "the fate of the gods") is literally currently translated as "the battle at the end of the world", a venue about a third of a mile from the Texas coast would work really well! You think you can work it out?
