Witold Rutkowski, (pronounced Vee-toe) the epee coach from BCFA several years ago, needs letters of recomendation to help him renew his visa here in America. This was a great guy and the sort of person that makes fencing mean so much to folks like myself. My letter is as follows:
Witold Rutkowski was my fencing coach for several years. While his English is not the best,
his fencing skills were substantial, and his coaching ability was exemplary. I began fencing
late in life, and it takes someone special to take an aging week-end athlete like myself and
turn him into a competitive enthusiast. I will always be grateful for Witold's gentle corrections
to my form and mindset. He helped me improve and move to a new level of competence.
More important than his help to me, however, is the fact that he was a fantastic coach to everyone in my club. All the adults in the club enjoyed his lessons, but the kids were the ones to benefit the most from his enthusiasm and general good-natured ways. He was just one of those characters that kids pick up on, because he had so much fun with them. You could tell he was doing something he loved, and everyone tried to do their best since it meant so much to him to see you improve. He was sorely missed by the club when he left, but we all knew it was a good move for him, so we wished him well in his new endeavor.
Witold is the kind of person you can point out to show why immigration is a good thing...this country is a better place with him here. To force him to leave would be a shame.
