Cute, but how well does it work?
Anyone got a report back on this thing from Portland?

Not me. I was running from strip to strip until I was running for a cab. Never got a chance to hit the vendors.

I stopped by... It was uninteresting. It does something with starting a timer. if you fence foil or sabre, to start the timer you can touch you weapon to your chest. Then the timer starts. I dont know what the big deal is. But im a sabre fencer. they dont even use clocks at NAC's. They did say its the cheapest box on the market.

I stopped by and spoke with the Todd Brown about this new scoring machine and played with it a bit. The electronics appear to be sound. It has a port for upgrades to the program or for the addition of extension lights (not available as yet , but the designer will give you the pinout of you wish to build your own.) The autoclock feature which D wrote about was actually kind of neat. Since it does have a built in timer you can fence with your opponent without having someone start the clock for you. Although as she pointed out this is not a necessity in sabre, under normal circumstances, it can help control strip time. The "white lights" are actually yellow like the Favero FA-01. The sound level was a bit low and I fear that in a room full of fencers and machines it may be difficult to hear. Of course it totally lacked any sort of robust outer case to protect it from dropage. I fear that will not change since he is using a patented enclosure developed by his father. Todd said it was being total manufactured in the USA right now, but if "a lot" of orders came in he would have to look at producing components off shore. In other words he builds them to order. He has had some sound advice on the circuit of this unit from Dan D. and I believe he took it to heart. At less than $300 per unit, it is the least expensive solution to a club level scoring system.

The least expensive commercial solution, anyway. You can build your own box with a STAMP chip for about $50. -- Kevin

Got one for UTSA. So far it is taking some time to adjust to start and stop for the autoclock. After a while though you forget its even there. if you are just looking for a cheap box then you can turn off the time and just go with a ref.
As far as I can tell.... Its a good cheap box with some interesting potential.

I've used one at a club in Maryland. As has been said before, it's a good, inexpensive, box. I talked to the manufacturer, though, about his use of yellow vs white LEDs. Being Red-Greed deficient, I have dificulties sometimes differentiating between the green and yellow lights. He said that even though they are a lot more expensive, he thought that it was a good idea. We'll see.
