Vadim Komkov - Former Texas Tech Fencing Coach Passes

www.lubbockonline.com/stories/051808/obi_280239182.shtml Vadim Komkov, 88, passed away Wednesday, May 14th, in Jacksonville, Fla. He was born in Moscow, Russia in 1919, and served in the Royal Air Force in England during World War II. He married Joyce Radford of Long Eaton, England, in 1946.
Vadim was a professor of Mathematics at Texas Tech University from 1969-1980. In his career he also taught at the University of Utah, the University of Wisconsin, Florida State University, the University of West Virginia, and Winthrop University in South Carolina. He did research for the Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force base in Dayton, Ohio, and was a lifelong member of the American Mathematical Society.
Most recently, he was married to Donna Komkov of Jacksonville, Fla. He is also survived by his former wife, Joyce, of Lubbock; his five children, Valerie Komkov Hill (Glenn), Stephanie Komkov, Dr. Andrea Komkov (Tina), Leon Komkov (Rebecca), Michael Komkov (Melissa); and his five grandchildren, Ian and Naomi Hill, and Jim, John and Laura Komkov.
Vadim was a great lover of animals, especially his dog, Emily, and loved to tell jokes. He was also an accomplished swordsman and began a fencing club at Texas Tech in the 1970's. He always encouraged his children to pursue academic achievement and intellectual studies.
The family is grateful to McGraw Center Hospice of Jacksonville, Fla. for their wonderful care in his final days.

schlager7: A lot of clubs won't go younger than 10 or 12, but a few take students as young as 7. (I know because there are competitions for youth 8 & under at some tournaments).
