Stonington - A Groton man was charged early Saturday morning with striking a sword-wielding man in the face with a large gardening tool during a melee at a William Street apartment in Pawcatuck.
Police said the victim, Joseph O. Vorters, 29, of 27 William St. Apt. 3, had been seen brandishing a large Samurai sword during the incident. One of those who spotted Vorters through a window with the sword during the 2 a.m. incident was First Selectman Ed Haberek, who was riding along with officer Edward Cullen Jr. for the evening.
Police arrested Kenneth R. Carter 22, of 263 Mitchell St., Apt. 1, Groton, and charged him with first-degree assault, second-degree breach of peace and first-degree criminal trespass for entering Vorters' apartment and hitting him with the gardening tool.
Carter has been arrested several times over the past few years, most recently in June by New London police for second-degree threatening and breach of peace. That case is pending in court.
Police said several men and women were at a party at Vorters' apartment when a neighbor called police to report people yelling in the street and fighting. Vorters and Carter were then seen fighting inside the house. The dispute involved a woman.
Police said Vorters was treated and released at Rhode Island Hospital for serious head wounds.
Also arrested was James D. Smith, 19, of 216 Mitchell St., Groton, who was charged with first-degree criminal trespass, second-degree criminal mischief, interfering with a police officer, second-degree breach of peace and creating a public disturbance.
Smith, who has been arrested several times over the past year, was already free on a $75,000 bond after being arrested in June in connection with the April murder of Jose Cartagena in Groton. He faces charges of first-degree unlawful restraint, third-degree assault and second-degree breach of peace in that case.
A witness said Smith fought with Cartagena and then joined a group of eight men who beat and kicked Cartagena while he was on the ground. One of them, Dirren Conyers, 31, of 33 North Road was charged with strangling Cartagena and killing him. He is awaiting trial.
Vorters, who was charged with second-degree breach of peace on Saturday, was arrested last month for using a high-powered pellet rifle with a scope to shoot a woman while she was gardening in her Pawcatuck yard in May. That case is pending in New London Superior Court.
All three men are scheduled to appear in court on Saturday morning's charges on Aug. 14.
