1. Where have the worst injuries you have sustained in your fencing career occurred? Upper Extremity III. Elbow
Lower Extremity VI. Ankle
2. What is the severity of your worst injury? (3) Sprain/Strain
3. Have you ever fought with or handled a rapier? (yes or no) yes - just waved them around to get a feel for them
4. If you have some experience with rapiers, what do you think of rapier hilts compared to fencing bell guards? - no experience
5. Do you ever feel as if a longer bell guard would help lower the number of injuries to the hand and wrist? - I hadn't really thought about it before, but I do think that I've been whacked on my little finger when fencing foil (which has a smaller guard), and haven't when fencing epee.

Hello, all. I am new to this site, but I joined because I desperately need fencers to participate in a survey for school... I am in engineering and It's for a school assignment and my grade pretty much depends on the number of people who answer these..... Your answers would be greatly appreciated, because I really don't' want to fail!!!!!! See, that's not much inspiration to me, honestly. Perhaps you should appeal to my desire to further science, or point out that studying fencing injuries might help me not get injured, or something like that. I have a torn rotator cuff tear, but it's in my rear shoulder, so none of the above. Knee. Back knee, which is a distinction someone studying fencing injuries should know enough to make. I tore my meniscus. In my rear knee. No. Nor did I ever thrown a flaming barbed wire wrapped basketball at anyone when I was a basketball player, nor did I ever jump in front of lions and run for my life when I ran track. I'm beginning to think that I should have read ahead. What are you talking about? Kevin

Worst upper, somehow got my finger caught between mine and my opponents bell guard, not bad but it hurt for a bit. Worst lower, I sprained my ankle when I tripped over a reel cord on a retreat. Very little rapier experience. I do not think larger bell guards would do any good.

1. Where have the worst injuries you have sustained in your fencing career occurred? Upper Extremity V. Wrist/hand/finger - Weapon wrenched from hand backwards ended up stretching ligaments / tendons of index finger. Happened in July/August & still mending, although, much better than immediately after.
Lower Extremity III. Knee - Slightly hyperextended after stepping on opponent's weapon after attempted toe touch. Opponent pulled weapon out from under foot causing unplanned split. Wore knee brace until healed. V. Foot/toe - Slight hammer toe problem, but not sure if totally caused by fencing. VI. Ankle - Twisted both several times. Must wear either high top shoes or ankle braces.
Head / Spine - Chronic neck problems.
2. What is the severity of your worst injury? - (3) Sprain/Strain.
3. Have you ever fought with or handled a rapier? (yes or no) - No.
4. If you have some experience with rapiers, what do you think of rapier hilts compared to fencing bell guards? - N/A.
5. Do you ever feel as if a longer bell guard would help lower the number of injuries to the hand and wrist? - No.

Thank you all for your participation!!! You helped me A LOT!!!
Ok, I know you guys might be getting tired of me and my high school engineering questions about fencing and weapons, but right now, I need pictures of injuries caused by fencing...
Bruise pix included!
Please help me out and send me some, along with your real name (first name only) and your location (as in state).
I greatly appreciate it!!!

ok all, I need some information (again for my engineering project). Can anyone get me the name of the person or people who started the whole Texas Gulf Coast Fencing Forum? I need this for my APA resources page... I greatly appreciate the help I'm getting from you all!! Thank you!
