I have been fencing a bit under a year, strictly at my club, and am considering my first tournament for sometime this spring.
An older/wiser head at my club suggested I may want to start learning how to assemble/repair my own weapons in case something goes awry at the tournament.
I currently own two working electric foils (foil is all I fence right now) but have heard remarks about "French tips" and "German tips" and a few others... (Is there a "Sport 7"?)
Anyway, how can I tell what I have and what is the difference? I'll go ahead and ask which is "better" even though I am betting this will turn out to be a matter of personal preference

The best way to tell is to look at the screws. German screws are straight, threaded screws. French screws will have a "head" on them. Also, the French screws are beveled, meaning that they sit flush with the barrell. The German screws tend to stick out.
The second way to tell is to look at the tip (the part that goes inside the barrell). With the French tip, there will be holes for the screws. With the German, there will be no holes.
As far as preferences go, I use the German. German's are typically tougher and, for a reason I'm not exactly sure, they don't mess up on me as much as French. The major drawback to German tips, though, is that those screws that stick out can get smashed and thus get stuck in the barrell, rendering your tip useless.

You're asking a lot of questions that can be answered in "The Care and Feeding of All Things Fencing". For your copy you can go to www.homfencing.comor you can contact me directly, either by PM or at mmergens@hotmail.com

There is also the Leon Paul foil tip. The LP screws are the same for Foil and Epee. Here you have a summary of how the 3 different tips look-like: www.fencingforum.com/?q=node/53This is a diagram of a Foil Tip: saf.pair.com/foiltip.htmlI agree that MERGS' book is very helpful. It has a lot of tips on how to fix your fencing equipment and it is very well written.
