While there is little to none of this in our area, here are some interesting tidbits I culled from my emails this week...
Classical Foil - Open Tournament
Saturday, March 28, 2009
9:00 am - 4:00 pm
National Croquet Center
700 Florida Mango Road
West Palm Beach, Florida 33406
The Association for Historical Fencing and Palm Beach Classical Fencing are pleased to invite you to a classical foil tournament in West Palm Beach, FL.
Whether you're a seasoned fencer, a complete beginner, or somewhere in between, this is a great opportunity for you to meet other fencers, test out your skills, and get a taste of the spirit of classical fencing.
A classical fencing tournament differs in several ways from a modern (electric) fencing competition, so if you're new to classical fencing please read our rules carefully. One main difference is that in addition to touches, fencers are also scored on adherence to classical form.
Spectators are welcome free of charge.

SUNY Classical Foil Invitational
The SUNY Purchase Fencing Club requests the honor of your presence at
our second Classical Foil Invitational Tournament to be held the
weekend of April 4-5, 2009. The format worked very well last year and
so it will be repeated again. The Sunday workshop was very well
received and we look forward to doing it again.
This invitation is extend to members of your organization between the
ages of 17 and 25 years old (exceptions will be made for those who
have a college id). All skill levels are encouraged to come -
participants will register for one of two brackets (0-2 & 2+ years of
experience). The format of the tournament is undecided, but we hope to
do a round robin within each of the brackets (the final decision will
be based on the number of registrations though). Points for excellence
in technique and form will be award, so strict adherence to classical
form is necessary.
Saturday April 4th will begin at 12pm with equipment check and
warm-up. At 12:30pm we will have demonstrations for the public prior
to the bouts. The tournament will begin at 1pm. We hope to finish
prior to 5pm to allow for free fencing at the end of the day. The
event went long last year so we will have a 2nd piste this year.
On Saturday night we will go out to dinner in the area.
Sunday April 5th will begin at 12pm with a workshop on advanced foil
for the participants and instructors which will be taught by Maestro
Martinez. It will be a 2 hour workshop followed by 3 hours of
supervised free fencing. Maestro Martinez and Acosta-Martinez will be
there to supervise and "coach bouts". We have the space till 5pm.
The tournament will be run by the Association for Historical Fencing.
Please see the rules at www.ahfi.org. Each participant is responsible
for reading and understanding the rule prior to the tournament. Once
again, the standards of classical form will be rigorously enforced.
Registration for the weekend will be $15.00 for AHF members and $20.00
for non-members. This will include the tournament and Sunday
workshop. I have attached a registration form to send to those
participating. The registration deadline is March 23rd. All
participants must register prior to the tournament. A list of hotels
in the area is below.
I will ask that you "rsvp" by Feb. 1st to let me know if you and/or
anyone from your organization will be attending. This will help us
greatly in planning the event. Registration will be open until March
23rd and we will also accept registrations at the door.
If you have any questions or need help with logistics please let me know.
Take care,
Jared Kirby
