In my (very) younger (& dumber) days, I recall a few of the guys fencing epee sans jacket and T-shirt with points d'arret. Taught you distance and how to parry like nothing else.
Of course, this was done only when our coach was not around...
We probably fenced a bit like your duelists in the newsreel. When you add bleeding as a factor, it DOES alter the equation.

Yeah... and it was way too short. So either, one of the guys just sucked or one was so amazingly awesome that no one could dodge that attack.

Looked to me like the guy in the white shirt (who got hit) in the long shots, had a tendency to lean forward too much and got hit before he could pull back.
...just my opinion...
