I'll guess both had had just enough fencing to make them dangerous. Looked like intermediate foilists taking their first epee class.

That video is much more enjoyable when you turn the sound off. That announcer made me yearn for the silence of the 1938 duel vid.

I admit to being surprised that dueling continued into the age of film, particularly up to the late 1950s. When was the last duel with swords fought?

According to Wikipedia (so take it with a shaker of salt). . .
The last duel in France took place in 1967 when Gaston Deferre insulted René Ribière at the French parliament and was subsequentially challenged to a duel fought with swords. René Ribière lost the duel, Deferre's sword having twice shed Ribière's blood. René Ribière was only slightly injured and got married the following day.
