Epee blades with foil guards, I notice. Not exactly NCAA approved. And I also note that the camera was a respectful distance away. These days. the papparazzi would be in the middle of it all.

To pull in a conversation from the thread on the 1958 duel... According to Wikipedia (so take it with a shaker of salt). . . The last duel in France took place in 1967 when Gaston Deferre insulted René Ribière at the French parliament and was subsequentially challenged to a duel fought with swords. René Ribière lost the duel, Deferre's sword having twice shed Ribière's blood. René Ribière was only slightly injured and got married the following day. I presume this is the duel we are watching in this thread.

This is fascinating. I had no idea dueling continued up to times this recent... (let alone that there was footage of it!)
Do you think this really was the last duel with swords or do you think there have been other, less publicized, encounters since then?
