Louise isn't hosting an SYC next year?
That is more than a little odd.

And the fireworks have started....Louise is MAD. There's an understatement. Wanna guess who has a call in from Houston to Ro Sobalvarro? While I am between posts, here is the official statement off the USFA site. USFA Announces 2009-2010 SYC Schedule
Courtney Winninger March 23, 2009Colorado Springs, CO- The United States Fencing Association has announced the 2009-2010 Super Youth Circuit (SYC) schedule. The circuit will consist of seven tournaments spanning the North Atlantic, Mid Atlantic, Great Lakes, and Pacific Coast Sections. Bids were awarded to Cobra Fencing Club, the Golden Gate Fencing Foundation, Mission Fencing Center, the National Fencing Foundation of Washington D.C., Prise de Fer Fencing Club, Rochester Fencing Club, and the USFA Kentucky Division. The Selection Committee comprised of USFA Vice President, Roberto Sobalvarro, who oversees Youth Programs, Associate Executive Director, Director of Operations and National Events, Christine Strong Simmons, and Youth Development Manager, Courtney Winninger. SYC events allow athletes a chance to earn national points. Fencers may participate in more than one SYC tournament, however, only the competition where the fencer earns the most points will be included in the point standings. These events are part of the qualification paths for both Summer Nationals and Youth 10 and 12 events at North American Cups. Tournament venues, hotels, and schedules will be posted soon. 2009-2010 SYC Schedule Mission Fencing Center Rocky Point NY October 24-25, 2009 Rochester Fencing Club Rochester NY November20-22, 2009 National Fencing Found. of Washington DC Annandale VA January 29-31, 2010 Cobra Fencing Club Jersey City NJ February 26-28, 2010 Prise de Fer Fencing Club Wellesley MA Boys Mar 20-21, 2010 Girls Apr 10-11, 2010 Golden Gate Fencing Foundation San Jose CA March 27-28, 2010 USFA Kentucky Division Louisville KY March 26-28, 2010

And the fireworks have started....Louise is MAD. As well she should be... I've heard from a parent or two that have attended SYC events in other parts of the country that said other venues/LOCs were over-crowded, over-heated, poorly organized, no local food, bad reels, etc. I don't think there's ever been an issue with an SYC here. I'm not "in the loop" but I think if there was a problem the division would have been discussing it. What are they thinking? Airline flights are less expensive to Houston, our state's youth fencing population alone can support an SYC if all of them show up. Any chance this can be repaired and TX get an SYC?

Well, whatever the Gulf Coast Division powers that be decide to do, at least with a look to the the 2010-2011 season, get ready for potential competition from our neighbors in the North Texas Division.
The following is another tidbit that appeared in my email a couple of days ago.
========================================================
Parents,
If it seems a bit unfair to you to have to travel out of our region next season to take your child to a Super Regional Youth Circuit, talk with your coach(es) and each other to get a committee together to submit a bid for our area. The more parent involvement, the more likely it will be that we can have these tournaments in our own yard.
The same goes for North American Cups, Junior Olympics, Summer Nationals and even World Cups. The more ALL of our clubs work together to host QUALITY events, the more the USFA will continue to look to North Texas as a tournament host.
You have a tremendous opportunity to help this summer - we are hosting a World Cup June 19-22 at the Dallas Sheraton Downtown (Women's Foil and Men's/Women's Sabre); and the 2009 Summer Nationals July 3-12 at the Gaylord Texan in Grapevine. We need adults to help the USFA with registration, people of all ages to act as bout committee runners, and a myriad of other jobs for both events.
We need EVERYONE to help with these events - and you don't have to be a fencer to lend a hand! Contact one of the following if you are interested:
LuAnn Gatts, Gold Blade Fencing Center, luchap@aol.com James Henningson, Dallas Fencers Club, j_henningson@hotmail.com
Jeff Crowe, Renaissance Fencers Club, cetme01@yahoo.com
David Sierra, Cutting Edge Fencing Club, coach@cuttingedgefencing.com
Brenda Waddoups, Fencing Institute of Texas, waddoups@airmail.net
George Stone, LaReunion Fencing Club, gesslk@earthlink.net
Remember, having these events in North Texas means we get to sleep in our own beds and we don't have to pay for airfare! It's to everyone's benefit to work together to keep the USFA coming back to Dallas/Fort Worth!
Brenda Waddoups, Secretary North Texas Division, USFA

The thing is, Brenda's right. We know we can do the show right here in Houston. Heretical as it sounds, some of the other regions have clubs just as active, who deserve their turn to shine as well. I for one think it would be a good idea to spread the love, so to speak. Yes, I enjoy the events, and get a great deal of satisfaction from seeing my efforts help make it a good competition, that people will return to again at "my" venue. Others should have their chance, too.

*chuckle* I've been trying to put together an SYC bid in North Texas for a couple of years. I've not done it yet, because, well, either I haven't found the right venue (for the right price) or there have been other factors. For example, this season, North Texas was hosting Summer Nationals. No reason we should try to do an SYC as well. Those of you who attend tournaments I run, you know that I run GOOD events, and will not compromise my standards. I think though, I've got something that might work... . Maybe for the 2010-2011 season or the 2011-2012 season. Hey, I think LONG term. In the meantime, we will be running the Wang Memorial again this fall...

My title may be premature. It is looking like Louise may get a FALL SYC for 2009. Interesting...

Yeah....armory in a tent over Labor Day, maybe. UGH, I'd rather be in the cold. You can only take off so many clothes, then people start laughing (or throwing up). We'll need LOTS of fans if this goes through.

Wow, if there's going to be a national points event Labor Day weekend, there go the last vestiges of the off-season.

Labor Day?
*sigh*
We'd had a nice tradition of doing the Cougar Call to Arms and a night in Galveston.

I would've thought Call to Arms had the squatters rights to that weekend!

The thought is that the holiday weekend would give the kids the ability to travel without missing school. Call to Arms would happen a week or so later. I still don't want to be outside in the hot...

If Louise is looking for a fall date, why not the Friday-Sunday Thanksgiving weekend? (running for cover)
