Just to pass along, yesterday a person or persons unknown broke into the Houston Athletic Fencing Center. From what Louise Lepie told Nicole, the incident happened sometime between 11AM and 6PM.
I have heard only sketchy details thus far, but my understanding is little or no theft but a fair amount of damage/vandalism.
I imagine others with better knowledge may post later.

I know from coach Delfina that BCFA activities are canceled at least this week. This really sucks... but fortunately, vandals know little about the value of fencing equipment.

This is terrible. What the heck did they expect to find in a fencing salle?

Exactly what I was thinking!! I thought it was horrible, but at least they didn't steal all the equipment in the shop! .. Well, if activities have been cancelled for an entire week, the damage has to be pretty bad. They probably need to get new frames for posters, re-paint walls, and goodness knows what else. Thanks for telling me about this John, and I want to tell Louise that I'm sorry this happened to BC. Maybe they should start thinking about getting a few security cameras.

Not to pick on the younger set, but this sort of thing often seems to coincide with the end of the school year. It's summer, mom and dad are at work, no school, few options for a summer job and less for summer recreation.
Idle hands, as the saying goes...

Glad to hear little was taken. What kind of damage did they do? I presume a door was damaged for entry's sake.

They broke in through some fire doors, and smashed a window to get into the store. They were looking for money only...they broke into the cash register (empty, Louise is smarter than leave $$ sitting around) rifled a couple of cash boxes (Maybe a dollar on loose change) and we think, took a few drinks. They left everything else untouched. And closed the door behind themselves. Go figure. The cleaning crew will be in today to clean up the glass, and security measures are being considered.

I'm glad to hear she didn't lose any merchandise, but I know how expensive repairing the effects of vandalism can be. My sympathies to Ms. Lepie.

I did see on the news there is alot of this going on, I know that doesnt really help, however, there are some things to do, install cameras, get a security system, make friends with the police and get them to make drive bys, ask the business around her and they all watch out for each other. This is an upsetting situation, and I wish Louise all the best.

If they're stupid enough not to know that the fencing equipment was worth a lot of money, then they're stupid enough to leave prints or personal items around too. Without security cameras to get a description or prints, no one is ever going to really know who did it. What type of alarm system were they using?

Unfortunately some of our officers of the law aren't too excited to do extra work. The officer I let into the facility made no attempt to check for prints or anything distinguishing.
One of the tools they used were left in the building (the cop brushed it off) The brick was left in the building as well as shoe prints on the back door. The cops was totally against the idea of checking for prints on anything.
When my car was broken into (in my driveway) the cop who showed up was against checking for prints as well. WTF!

The same thing happened to me. When my car was broken into and all of my fencing equipment was stolen, the officer that responded just sort of hefted the tire iron that had been used to break into my car and said "They did it with this."
I imagine dusting for prints and other such forensics require an expensive specialist. The cops probably don't whip those guys out unless it's something special, like a murder.
They caught the guy that stole my stuff anyway because he tried to pawn it for $20.

I guess we were lucky, when the cops came, about my daughters tire, they responded quickly, and were helpful. I do see them drive by the neighborhood more now too.
