Why I drink..
In a somewhat snarky moment on July 5th, having found NO news items on the National Fencing Championships on any of the Dallas or Fort Worth newspaper or television station websites, I sent a short (perhaps terse) email to the sports contact of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Lee Williams.
It read, "Just thought I'd let you know that the National Championships of a sport that has been in every Summer Olympic Games since 1896 is happening right now in the Gaylord Hotel in Grapevine... I just thought the total lack of coverage was a bit remiss..."
The response I got this afternoon read, "What would that sport be? We’ve heard nothing..."

Bhinder vs Stephanie Wheeler... Div I Women's Epee (Stephanie on the right) I'm glad you posted this, it's good watching her fence again. And correct me if I'm wrong. But is that Patrick Moore in the background talking? haha It's gotta be.

I guess the days of investigative journalism are over. I'll bet Woodward and Bernstein could've figured out how to pick up the phone and call the Gaylord.

I sent them some contact email and phone number stuff. I got a response email today and forwarded it to some folks there, on scene.
Not much more I can do from Galveston.

I noted a question on FNet regarding NYAC fielding TWO teams for a specific event and how this was allowed. I enjoyed oiuyt's reply
Sounds similar to something down here.

Unfortunately, there will be a brief (I hope) hiatus in my sorting of USFA results until I see signs of corrections on the USFA pages. Currently, a number of Y10 and Y12 results are wholly or partially obscurred. As well, the results listed for Div 3 MF is identical to Junior ME...

Just as I got it from my Division Chair (and very good friend), Oscar Barrera, in my e-mail. Just thought you'd be interested in a "from the front" report. And also my chance to say "Congratulations, Esperanza Barrera!!!"
Good afternoon, all, Recovering from yesterday. Esper and I drove up to Grapevine, Tx. early Wed, morn to U.S. Summer Nationals (Gaylord Convention Center). It was big...and very hot outside. About fifty strips set up, I think....we were on the 20's and 30's for her event (Div I-A Women's Epee). She qualified first at Sectionals in Houston in late April. Injuries healed up in time for that Qualifier. Upon entering the venue at about 11:15 a.m., on the down escalator we met Dean Lantrip and his girlfriend, Nicole. Dean had a bad morn and won 2 bouts and lost 4 (some by one touch); he did not make the cut of 80% up. So it was back to S.M. for him. After getting Esper registered, we found Will Cisler fencing his first d.e. bout, which he lost. Another person having a bad day. He and Diana stayed on the rest of the day and cheered on Esper. Saw John Moreau coaching some of his jr. students. Yesterday, Adam Davis placed 5th in the U-14 ME event in a huge field. His older sister Kristin was also about to fence Div I-A epee soon. They are some of John's students. Women's Epee had a field of 73. Esper was seeded 17th going into the first round. She did well with her first 3 bouts, winning them, handily. She struggled with the next two and lost them both by one touch. Her timing went off. Not sure why. Into the d.e.'s she was seeded 14th. And from there she took off and did the job she came to do. She was fencing very well....the old Esper we know, who can fence a women's epee event and a mixed epee event at at Pouj; win the women's and make the top 6 or 4 of the mixed epee in one day....lovely counter time hits to the hands..the classic toe/foot touches, and over the top blade takes w/hits to the forearm.... She ran into a tall, college girl, a left-hander who was hard, very hard to hit. Esper was down 11 to 7 with 30 seconds left in the bout. She did short fleches, she did short lunges and tied it up. Another lunge at 15 seconds in the sudden death and she advanced to the round of four. And again, we began hearing about inquiries to other Texas fencers as to whom was this fencer who was unknown outside of the Texas fencing scene.... She beat Oksana Samorodov from Alamo Fencing very easily (they train together about once a week) and then it was the bout for gold. Again, six minutes of nothing but sizing up each other with a good bit of blade contact (some wag said it looked liked seeing Risto Hurme fence himself...) then all of the action in the last 3 minutes....from a tie of 1 to 1, to a final ending of 12 to 5 with counter actons into fleches and lunges being the actions that worked for Esper. Her last opponent was very patient and lulled opponents into her tempo. Esper fell for that a few times and then changed. Counters and straight lunges put her past the girl. The girl then got anxious as the last period wound down and began to fleche. That was what Esper was waiting for and did multiple counter attacks mostly to the hand, forearm and one to the mask....final score Esper 13; her opponent, 8. Esper won her first U.S. National Championship in w. epee. This gold medal goes nicely with all the other golds she has from Mexican National Championships. This was over at about 8:30 last night. The late end also left us with no time to shop the vendors...they had all closed by the end of the finals. We never had time earlier to check them out as we had planned. I got all of her bouts on tape. I also managed to break the camera (the view window with the lcd display) and re-injured myself. I was trying to find a better angle to film from...stepped off a chair and onto a plastic bottle, slipped and popped the left knee out again. Medics and e-personnel all over me in a couple of seconds. No pain after the initial fall, but it did swell as usual. The ice packs were on for 4-5 hours, until we got home early this morn. Some thought I had a heart attack....which I could have had after seeing Esper being behind and the clock running out. Esper says, she looked about for me, because I fell just as the second period ended. I was to have come up to her and counseled her, as I normally do. She did not see me and thought that VERY STRANGE and noted a crowd around someone back behind the rails where the spectators were. I hollored out that I was ok. Began filming in a chair after the third period started. She was tired after the last bout, very tired and drenched in sweat and VERY HAPPY. She was the most "mature" person on the podium---again, as in the 2006 Houston NAC (North American Circuit), by twenty years. That's my wife! Called Kevin B. (as requested) when it was all over; you could hear the happy yells from the crowd when he told the party (you know there is always a fencing party going on Wed. nights....) about Esper's win. We forgot to get her potassium prior and during the bouts....gatorade and water only went so far. Cramps almost de-railed everything. Recalled the tabs in time for the last 2 bouts...need to think better in the future. We slept in this morn. We had some pretty tasty quesadillas and tamles washed down with ice-cold mimosas. And then we looked at the tapes of the bouts later in the morn. Pretty impressive fencing for her. Lovely counter time. It was good that some of the coaches who know her (and think well of her) and have moved on out of Texas were very generous with advice about some of her opponents; with the exception of Oksana, all of her opponents were unknown to us and how they fenced. Prior knowledge of their styles is critical. Many thanks to Will and Diana who stayed until it was all over. It was good to have their support and help all day. Mike Beavers fences Div 2 foil today and Kevin Beahan fences Div 2 epee on Sunday. Our best wishes go out to them. Have not heard how Damaris did yet. Robert Reed had a VERY BAD day in Div I epee; he tied for last place. No one can believe that, but the results are posted. He finished tied for 3rd in Div I-A yesterday and he should have photos from Nationals posted on his site (noted below) by next week. Thanks from all of us at Texas State to all of the guest epee and foil fencers who have been coming the past few weeks to train for Nationals....someone commented that the last few epee workouts at TxState have been A-4 ones. Tommi Hurme, Bruce Tabor, the Kubik brothers, the Parkers (Jon and Melissa), Kevin Nadeau, Robert Reed, Rob Janca, Derrek White, Tim French, Ray Sexton, Katie Williamson and I am sure that I am forgetting others. The Games of Texas will be the last weekend in July at Palo Alto College, San Antonio. Most of us will be there. Flyers (very nice ones, in colour) for Bobcat 35 and Pouj 30 were available at Nationals. They kept going from the table...hopefully, we will have more out of section guest fencers for these tournaments.
Stay well all of you, Regards, Oscar Barrera

Media coverage, at last! Thank you, Star-Telegram! Fencers from across nation competing in GrapevineThere is also a videoclip on the Webpage for the StoryFriday, Jul 10, 2009 Posted on Thu, Jul. 09, 2009 By ELIZABETH ZAVALAGRAPEVINE — Barbara Hilliard still looks at the words her first fencing coach wrote 57 years ago to calm her nerves on the eve of her quest to make the Olympic team. "This is your year of surprise. Exploit it as much as you can, because this year will never come back," wrote Aldo Nadi, an Italian Olympic gold and silver medalist known at the time as one of the greatest fencers in the world. Hilliard no longer has aspirations of Olympic gold medals, but she’s still competing — at age 82. The Grapevine woman is among 4,000 fencers competing at the 2009 Summer National Championships, organized by the U.S. Fencing Association, at the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center. The event, which began July 3 and ends Sunday, attracts fencing teams from across the nation. It is an opportunity for Olympic hopefuls in foil, épée and saber fencing to gain enough points to make the world championship and U.S. Olympic teams, said Brenda Waddoups, tournament coordinator for the Fencing Institute of Texas in Farmers Branch. Participants range in age from 8 to their 80s. "Our veterans groups are growing," Waddoups said. Fencing is a combat sport that dates to ancient times. It requires a tremendous amount of mental rather than physical athleticism, said Waddoups, who is secretary for the North Texas division of the U.S. Fencing Association. "The mental part of the game doesn’t slow down. That’s what they [fencers] love about it," Waddoups said. Shaylan Shourds, 33, a fencer and board president of the Fencing Institute of Texas, picked up the sport in college when he was 16. "It’s a great conditioning exercise and a dignified sport," he said. Back in the game Hilliard learned to fence when most people had acquainted themselves with the sport through the Errol Flynn swashbuckling films of the 1930s and ’40s. When she was 25, Hilliard, known then as Barbara Baxter, placed sixth in the Olympic tryouts in 1952, missing the cut by two to be on the team. She was in college, had been fencing for four years and had collected 24 medals in foil competitions, which was the only event women could compete in at the time, she said. She eventually gave up the sport to raise a family, then picked it back up five years ago. On Thursday, Hilliard, who fences with the Gold Blade Fencing Center, competed with three other women in the Women’s Veteran 70 category in foil. "I’m assuming they’re younger than I am," Hilliard said. "I hope these younger ladies aren’t too spry for me." Hilliard fenced for about 3 1/2 hours and finished tied for third with Una Jackson, 71, of Hilton Head, S.C. The winner was Terry Abrahams, 72, of Tampa, Fla., followed by Judith Evans, 71, of Greenwich, Conn. "I love fencing," Hilliard said. "Strategy is important. You have to size up the fencer." Hilliard fences four times a week. But when she isn’t working on her moves and strategies with the foil, she is an arts enthusiast. She paints using oil and watercolor, sculpts and plays the piano. But her love of fencing is right up there with her active, retired life. "Fencing will extend my life and keep me healthy," she said. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you go The U.S. Fencing Association 2009 Summer National Championships continues through Sunday at the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center, 1501 Gaylord Trail, Grapevine. Competition in a variety of age groups and divisions begins each day at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 7 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. Parking is $12. Online: www.usfencing.org

More Nationals News in my e-mail from Oscar Barrera:
Hello again to all, We have another U.S. National Championships finalist from the JOWERS TRAINING CENTER FOR FENCING: Kevin Beahan, out-going TxState F.C. president, and May 2009 TxState Univ. graduate, finished 8th in Div 2 Men's Epee this afternoon. It was another huge field of fencers, I am told. He said that he missed going to 6th place by two touches when I spoke with him by phone. He also said, that "when things started getting tough, I would begin to think, 'what would Esper do in this situation...?". And that is a direct quote!
Kevin and Rebecca will be back sometime tomorrow. Kevin has been fencing 3 1/2 years or so and plans to continue, especially after this great placing at his FIRST national championship and his first national tournament. Training will commence again tomorrow at Jowers at about 7 p.m. for some of us. Games of Texas and the Bobcat are coming up in the next 60 days or so. There will probably be a gathering at Valentino's (on the square) this Wednesday evening at about 9 p.m. to celebrate and visit with the two National Championship finalists. It is also a chance to say bon voyage to Will Cisler who leaves for Berlin, Germany on the 17th to study for a month. Pizza and beer until they throw us out.....give me a call Wed. afternoon for more details if you are interested. 512-665-0686--cell No news yet about Mike Beavers nor Damaris Dotson at Nationals. USFA is being their usual useless selves and not publishing results in a timely manner. Stay safe, all, Oscar B.

Except for team results and the Vet 40 Women's Foil and Vet 60 Men's Epee results (why those two aren't posted I have no idea), I believe for the divisions in Texas & the SW Section, I've got all the results sorted by division below. Just click the link Texas & the SW Sectionthen pick the division you are interested in and the results should be the first unstickied post on that board.
