Thank you so much for listing this. Feel free to stop by the site and read the script.
If you aren't on our mailing list, please add your name and email. Our first goal is to build a database of people who would like to see this film made and want updates. You won't be spammed and will only receive an email if something really important happens.
Once we start production we will rely on our Twitter and Facebook accounts which are not currently active.
Thank you again for posting this. I've had a lot of positive comments from people who would like to see a "Karate Kid with Swords."
Please feel free to email me if you have any questions.

I will.
BTW, having read the synopsis, I would like to offer a word of advice.
No matter how good a fencer is, the rest of don't give them nicknames, especially something like "the Sword." We refer to even a 2x Olympic gold medalist, like Mariel Zagunis as... Mariel Zagunis.

"No matter how good a fencer is, the rest of don't give them nicknames"
Maybe that's what's wrong with the sport....

No, our problem is our sport doesn't employ a ball...

No, our problem is our sport doesn't employ a ball... Well, maybe in certain target drills.

Swimming also doesn't employ a ball and enjoys much more airtime than fencing. They do have such greats as Michael "The Albatross" Gross and Michael "The Torpedo" Thorpe.
On further consideration, perhaps we should all just change our name to Michael...

Thank you.
Actually, the entire script has always been on the website but I did have one woman tell me her browser wouldn’t let her scroll past page 25 so some of you may have had that same problem.
I just made a couple small changes and uploaded a current copy of the script. This weekend, I will change the way the script opens and have it open in a separate window. That may make it open faster.
If you want to read the script and can’t get it to open, feel free to email me and I’ll send you a PDF by email.
CARUSO AND THE SWORD is a family comedy, not a serious drama. And, scripts aren’t written like novels (if you haven’t read a script before).

CARUSO AND THE SWORD (C.A.T.S.) is now listed on IndieGoGo.com/caruso-and-the-sword. IndieGoGo is a resource that helps filmmakers raise funds to make their movie by offering perks such as pre-selling DVDs, posters, autographed props, (just about anything you can dream up}, in exchange for a donation. Right now, we have pre-sales of the limited edition DVD. C.A.T.S is fiscally sponsored by a non-profit. There are no investors waiting to make money off this film. So, making this film is dependent on people wanting to see it get made. We will also be offering incentives to post a C.A.T.S. widget on your website and receive perks for referring those who find C.A.T.S. through your website and donate. We are also starting an Advisory Committee to offer input through all phases of production on how this film can help promote fencers, fencing, clubs, and vendors (contact me if interested).

I got this in my email.Updates Fencing Film - Advisory Committee, Funding ResourceWhen I sent my first email about a film in development that features fencing, several months ago, I promised I would not inundate you with lots of emails. You are busy and don't need constant updates. However, we are progressing with the film so I would like to take a few minutes of your time for updates. As a reminder, CARUSO AND THE SWORD is about a teen who finds himself when he discovers the sport of fencing. 1. We are looking for fencers, coaches, club owners, and others interested to serve on an Advisory Committee. The Advisory Committee would offer input on ways that the making of the family film, CARUSO AND THE SWORD (C.A.T.S.), could help promote fencing, fencing clubs, and fencers through all phases of the production. Many of you have offered input and that is always welcome. The Advisory Committee would interact regularly and provide input as a group. We expect the time commitment to be 2-4 hours per month but this would depend on the committee members. If you are interested in serving on the Advisory Committee, or want more information, just reply to this email ( info@carusoandthesword.com ). 2. CARUSO AND THE SWORD is now listed on IndieGoGo. In July our fiscal sponsor partnered with a funding resource. IndieGoGo.com is a resource that allows filmmakers to raise funds to by offering perks such as pre-selling DVDs, autographed props, dinner with an actor, screenings, film credits, etc. in exchange for a donation. CARUSO AND THE SWORD is fiscally sponsored by a non-profit. There are no investors waiting to make money off this film so this is great news. If you would like more information you can click on the link here or the picture below. Many of you have expressed excitement at the idea of a family comedy featuring fencing. We need people who want to see a "Karate Kid with Swords" get made. IndieGoGo tracks where referrals come from and anyone with a webpage can obtain their own link (widget).

From my email:
Hello,
As you may remember, we have an Advisory Committee for CARUSO AND THE SWORD (C.A.T.S), a family comedy film in development that features fencing.
The purpose of the Advisory Committee is to offer input on ways that the making of C.A.T.S., through all phases of production, can help promote fencing, fencing clubs, and fencers.
The first Advisory Committee meeting experienced numerous software issues, but many thanks to those who persisted with humor, grace, and some very valuable insights. Below are some of the responses we've received to date. There were some variations, but a common theme ran through the concerns. Issues facing club owners, coaches, and others included letting people know a club exists in their area, building membership, retention, and dispelling myths about fencing. While there are numerous resources, such as AskFred and Fencingnet, for those interested in tournaments and the technical aspects of fencing, very few address the issues related to the marketing of fencing and clubs.
We also plan to put this newsletter online so that comments and ideas can more easily be shared. A club in New York with a great marketing idea is not in competition with a club in Chicago. "Preaching to the choir" is a comment I've heard often. A web guru told me that preaching to the choir is important in order to build a base of supporters. He said the base of supporters are the real "golden nuggets" upon which everything else is built. So, those of you reading this aren't just the choir - you're the "golden nuggets."
Thank you, Paula Smith Writer/Producer CARUSO AND THE SWORD

Raising the funds to get this project off the ground has been challenging, and the economy hasn't helped. But we continue to work on it. I am working with a gal to put together a local fundraiser. If you have the time, and you see this, would you mind completing a very short survey? It is on the Facebook page for C.A.T.S. facebook.com/carusoandthesword Responses so far have been interesting and useful. Thank you. And, as always, any comments or questions are welcome.

A script reader once told me that I was brave to submit a script about fencing to a screenwriting contest. If a script includes a sport it is usually about football or baseball or soccer. Well, this week my "script about fencing" garnered praise in the non-fencing community. Below is information about 2 press releases. It has not been easy trying to raise funds for this film and I may do better promoting it as a family comedy about bullying. I will be working on the newsletter this week to get the word out to more people. ********* I have been trying to raise funds to produce my feature-length script in KC. The script is CARUSO AND THE SWORD and it is about a young teen who falls in love with the sport of fencing and then must overcome the school bully, poor grades, low self-esteem, and parental objections to achieve his dream of qualifying for the largest fencing tournament in the world - the Summer Nationals. Here's the good news I received this week. 1. My script CARUSO AND THE SWORD made the Nicholl Fellowship Quarterfinals. CARUSO AND THE SWORD was one of only 351 scripts out of 6,730 entries that advanced to the Quarterfinal round in the prestigious Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting competition. The Nicholl Fellowships is a program of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. According to the Nicholl Fellowships those scripts that have reached the Quarterfinal Round will next be read by at least two judges and about 110 to 120 of the Quarterfinal scripts will advance to the Semifinal Round. 2. CARUSO AND THE SWORD is a Finalist in the "From the Heart Productions" grant contest. From the Heart Productions is a nonprofit 501 (c) (3) organization that awards annual grants to films that are "unique and make a contribution to society." The organization was started in 1992 by Carole Dean. It is an in kind grant so winning would help but there are no production funds associated with this grant. If you would like more information you can check out the website carusoandthesword.com. You can also "like" the project on Facebook facebook.com/carusoandthesword Feel free to email me with any questions or comments. Sincerely, Paula Smith

Congrats. I really hope this film gets made now that I've kept up with the process. I had no idea it was this involved.

I second nemo's kudos. I have no contact with the world of selling a script to film makers. It seems a lot of self-marketing is invovled.
I appreciate the updates. For us in the fencing world, the cringing generally comes from seeing 80-year-old (and erroneous) cliches thrown out as truths of the competitive fencing milieu... that and swashbuckling actions that would cost you the bout in the real world.

from my email...Hello, I was once told by a reader that I was brave for submitting a fencing script to a screenwriting contest since writers usually submit scripts dealing with popular subjects. Well, this month that "fencing script" advanced in not one but two contests. CARUSO AND THE SWORD placed in the most prestigious screenwriting contest in the world. CARUSO AND THE SWORD was also a finalist in an in-kind grants contest. You can read more about the contests below. You can also read about my ongoing frustration in raising funds and what you can do to help if you want to see the "fencing script" become a movie. I would also appreciate it if you would take a brief 7 question survey. Let me know your interest in this film and your interest in helping get it made We also completed a table read of the first 25 pages of the script. A table read is where actors sit around a table and read the script. It's done without directing the actors. Thank you, Paula Smith Writer/Producer CARUSO AND THE SWORDmore info here.
