I would like to make the first announcement of the 2010 West Coast Taikai!
That’s right folks, the largest gathering of Japanese sword practitioners, demonstrators and retail dealers in the USA is back after a two year hiatus for economy sake and is scheduled for Labor Day weekend September 3rd-4th 2010 at the Hilton Hotel Costa Mesa in Orange County California.
This is the same venue for the previous two West Coast Taikai events , but instead of the Catalina Ball Room that was used we are now being given the larger and more prestigious Balboa Ball room downstairs which offers more room for vendors to display their products, Mike Yamasaki’s tameshigiri mei sword collection and display and a warm up area. The Hilton Hotel Costa Mesa has supported us in this event since the beginning and has become even more of a supporter for JSA and related events over the years.
Room rates have been secured at $109.00 per night and make sure to mention you are attending the West Coast Taikai when making your reservation.
This year’s event is dedicated to one of my teacher’s Seiji Ueki Sensei, Kaicho Zen Nihon Batto Do Renmei. Ueki Sensei passed away on Dec. 17th, 2009.
We will honor him at this year’s event and remember what he has done for those of us practicing here in the USA and Batto Do as a whole. I hope you can join us!
As in the past, we will have seminars all day on Friday and the actual taikai event on Saturday. The annual Friday night embu will take place at 7:00pm and will host the largest gathering of Koryu and Gendai sensei’s thus far from Japan and the USA.
The following Sensei’s are confirmed as of now:
Hataya Sensei: Kaicho, Zen Nihon Toyama Ryu Iaido Renmei / Seizankai Dojo
Mukai Sensei: Technical Dir., Zen Nihon Toyama Ryu Iaido Renmei / Seizankai Dojo

Carl McClafferty Sensei: Renmei-Cho, Shin Shin Sekiguchi Ryu Batto Jutsu
Masayuki Shimabukuro Hanshi: Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu / Ono Ha Itto Ryu Kenjutsu
Brian Stokes Sensei: Suio Ryu Iai Kenpo
Tentative pending scheduling:
Toby Threadgill Sensei: Kaicho, Takamura-Ha Shindo Yoshin Ryu
Ellis Amdur Sensei: Menkyo Kaiden, Araki Ryu Torite Kogusoku
There are other names pending and once confirmed will be added to the list of demonstrators and seminar instructors as things progress.
Please look for additional information to follow in the next few days.
I look forward to seeing you there and I wish all of you a happy and safe New Year.
Aloha
