Just something weird I've heard a couple of times since March. Is Louise Lepie planning to close down her building on Bellfort?
Anyone?

That would be a terrible loss. It is a great space for fencing. If true is there any idea why?

I've heard similar talk, but I would point out that (as I understand it) Louise has put in a bid to host an SYC this fall, so I figure she plans to hold the space for the immediate future.

Well--I hope Louise let's us know first (Woodlands Fencing). It is a great space!

I don't have any inside info, but just common sense says that since she'll need to maximize her revenue right up until the time she sells the space, she won't let you know until the last minute -- otherwise you might start looking for somewhere else and leave before she's sold out.

I think I just overheard someone's gossip, someone who overheard Louise kvetching.
Heard something similar about five years ago.

Hoping I'm wrong, but this may become a thread suddenly worth revisiting...

BCFA closing? For real? One venue to close as a new one (Woodlands) opens?
Disappointing for local fencing.

It has to be a pricey facility to maintain. When there are no tournaments, the weekends likely represent more of a drain than anything.
Since fencers mostly meet in the evenings (and weekends) for practice, I think the real issue is probably finding a way to keep a space as revenue-positive during the Monday-Friday 9-5 slot.
I hope this is not true, but if so, give her credit for maintaining such a place for so long.

Too bad.
With the Woodlands facility about to open, Houston could have been set for great things with two designed-for-fencing venues.

I am probably saying too much about my non-fencing interests, but rumor has it the Houston Athletic Fencing Center may be playing host to the "sweet science" in the "squared circle."
A ploy to generate revenue and stave off going dark?

I could see that. The spare room left of the lobby could easily hold a boixing ring. Not my thing, but in her shoes I would not be too stuck-up to turn down the income. Just keep the salle alive!

Now I hear through the grapevine that all the speculation is nothing but "gossip". LL is merely "disappointed she didn't get the SYC".
But what I heard is perhaps....gossip?
LOL. I love this division.

gossip, mebbe.
No denying, though, that attendance at BCFA has been pretty small lately.
There's another Weekend Warriors tournament this Saturday. How many has she cancelled this spring for low pre-registrant numbers?
Perhaps gossip that is closer to the truth than LL wants to think.

She may be down, but I doubt she's out.

I have received the following email...
Hi John, Lousie wanted to know if you could post the following message on the Gulf Coast Forums and on Fencing.net
"After serious negotiations, we signed a contract with a sporting association that will mean that BCFA is again a healthy fencing club. I appreciae all the e-mails and calls from friends that were saddened by the news of closing the doors. Thank you to everyone for your concern and support. Hope to see you at BCFA tournaments at the Houston Athletic Fencing Center."

It seems BCFA may stay around for a bit. To bring in some needed income they will be hosting boxing events on some Saturdays (presumably when there is no fencing). From what I hear, this Saturday evening may be the first such event.

Boxing back in Houston By Peter Lim Fightnews.com June 25, 2011www.fightnews.com/Boxing/boxing-back-in-houston-3-88028The latest Savarese Boxing Promotions show, Battle on Bellfort, will be held at the Houston Athletic Fencing Center on Saturday June 25. While local club shows typically feature one-sided matchups between upcoming fighters padding their records against journeymen, this one also includes several intriguing and competitive bouts between fighters who are in it to win it. Three-time Southeast Texas Golden Gloves champion Cesar Martinez, 2-0 (1 KO), takes on Eddie Tiggs, 1-0-1, in a middleweight bout. Lightweight Bahodir Mamajanov, 1-0 (1 KO), of Uzbekistan, faces Jesus Mendez, 3-1 (2 KOs). Heavyweight Ahror Muralimov, 4-0 (4 KOs), also of Uzbekistan, takes on veteran journeyman Andrew Greely, 14-36-3 (8 KOs). While this might not seem like a competitive bout at first glance, consider that Muralimov’s four previous opponents had a combined record of 0-5 and Greely has gone the distance against his last eight opponents, most of whom were heavy hitters. In the less suspenseful bouts, undefeated light heavyweight Cedric Agnew, 16-0 (8 KOs), faces a yet-to-be-named opponent. Super middleweight Jonathan Nelson, 13-0 (6 KOs), takes on Mikkel Williams, 8-23-4 (3 KOs). Junior welterweight KC Martinez, 7-0 (4 KOs), fights John DeJean, 3-5-1 (3 KOs). Cruiserweight Maurenzo Smith 7-2-2 (6 KOs) comes up against Christopher Jones, 0-2. Lightweight Rashad Ganaway, 10-2-1 (7 KOs), takes on Robert Hill, 3-12 (1 KO). And featherweight Gil Garcia, 4-1 faces Guadalupe Perez, 1-4.
