Can someone please explain to me the reported hoo-ha at the Cinncinatti NAC over fencers reportedly being sent to change because they were wearing what was described as "wrong-handed knickers."

Maybe because it's wrong to have your hand in your knickers?

I know no specifics regarding Cinncinatti NAC, but if the name was printed on the left leg, they would be right-handed knickers and if the name is on the right leg, they would be left-handed knickers. Maybe...

Weird guess, but does this have to do with which way the closing flap... closes?
If so, I'm lost. I've ordered my share of knickers on line and the RH/LH option was not offered. If this is important shouldn't I be able to choose?

I received the following from a referee at the Cincinnatti NAC.
"Yes, the last post is correct inasmuch as knickers with an overlapping flap have a "handedness" to them, and particularly with ill-fitting uniforms, pose a potential safety threat. Absolute's value stretch knickers come to mind. I was one of the refs who had this happen. Mary Frye was the first, when the Canadian she was reffing pointed it out on his opponent; the Canadians had a team black carded at team worlds when they had a leftie fencer in right-handed knickers, and couldn't come up with a pair of left-handed knickers to fit him. This isn't an issue for knickers that zip up centrally all the way up and don't have an overlap"

Knickers don't have hands. Although, I have put my hands in a few... ;D
Really, though, having coached a lot of kids who just don't have their own equipment and have to share, couldn't you just reverse them and wear them backwards and still conform to the USFA rules, if not the rules of style?
Q: What's the difference between a right and left-handed plastron (under-arm protector)? A: Turn it inside out.

It seems as if the "handedness" would rely more on your opponent than you.
Also, if there is a fly that opens one way or another (as traditionally men's and women's pants do), then you would have to change pants every time your opponent was right or left handed, depending on what you were wearing.
I say parry.

Longblade, that is simply too logical of a solution! Powers that be are not always that logical.

So do vendors offer left- & right-handed versions of their knickers, now?
