As you may have heard, the initial proposal from the Texas legislature did not include funding for Brazosport College or for three other Texas community colleges. This doesn't mean we're going under, but it does mean that we'd like very much to have them change that before the final budget is written. The fencing program is the sort of thing having a college here fosters; if we didn't have the gym and the storage at the college it would be very hard for me to run the program. And of course it's likely I wouldn't be here The final budget hasn't been set yet, so we're still in the phase where pressure from voters can sway how elected officials act. Of course, the college does a lot for the local community in general, but in specific they've been very good about hosting a fencing club. If you'd like to write a letter to someone supporting the four colleges which were written out of the budget or Brazosport in particular, Brazosport has a page with contacts here: www.brazosport.edu//legislativeinfo/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?List=a2881509-6c9e-443d-ae3a-124c6a7d83a4&ID=9Thanks, K O'N

Someone already routed me to an electronic petition (which I signed) asking that they reconsider this part of Texas HB1. I'll see about writing the letter as well.
I'm not a big fan of cutting funding to community colleges. For many young (and not so young) people, they represent the one source of a college education that they can afford.

Consider it done.
