Hello all,
Sorry about the dated mass mailing but I am in a hurry. Best say this bluntly. Claude Hippard died on 10 July, 2012. A memorial service for him will be held tomorrow afternoon at his church in Houston. Claude was at SWT from the Fall of 1973 until 1978 and graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice. He was a good epee fencer and occasionally known to pick up a sabre. He and David Morris went on, after college, to get their law degrees from U of Houston. Claude sometimes showed up for the Pouj and Bobcat tournies here in San Marcos and an occasional alumni banquet.
What can I say about Claude. Besides being a good friend to all and someone who really liked fencing before the law "swayed" him away, he was always fun to be with, fun to drink with and had a great outlook on life. He and I drove up to Colorado Springs, Co. in July of 1978 for US Summer Nationals. That was a fun trip. He was a young 57 years old when he left us. Makes some of us old timers think real seriously about our mortality, really seriously. Get those wills checked.....
Most of us who learned of his passing earlier today are still stunned; there is no better description. Howard Williams has sent a floral memorial in the name of his friends with the SWT Fencing Society.
David Morris and I were thinking of having a gathering of SWT alumni/TXState FC members this weekend to remember Claude but John Hoover had a better suggestion. It would be better to meet on the weekend of 20-21 July here in San Marcos. That would give those who might need to travel some distance a bit more chance to plan their trip. More details to follow but it will probably be at Grin's (where he was a cook while an undergraduate) or Palmer's which used to be Hanzel & Gretel's, our original meeting place...for club meetings, drinking, dining and general debauchery....
Will keep you all posted.
