On Feb. 25, the Federation Internationale d'Escrime announced that there will be a change in the dates used to determine age eligibility at the Veteran World Championships. While, in past years, the age of competitors was determined based on an athlete's age on the first day of the month in which the Veteran World Championships is held, beginning this year all categories will be determined based on competitor age as of Jan. 1 in the year of the Veteran World Championships. The announcement from the FIE stated: "It was decided that the date that enables to determine the age of the participants and class them into the different categories is the 1 January of a year, instead of the 1 September. In addition, the FIE also announced that team test-events will be held during the 2013 Veterans World Championships. FIE Letter

UPDATE: USA Fencing has confirmed with the FIE that the following are the eligible birth years for the 2013 Veteran World Championships: 50-59 1954-1963 60-69 1944-1953 70+ 1943 and before Month and day of birth is not considered.

Seems like a refreshingly simple system, something I would never have expected to have come from the FIE.
