It can now be officially announced that the 2006 NCAA Fencing Championships will be held once again in Houston. The tournament will be held at the JW Marriott Hotel, March 16 through March 20. A schedule of events will follow soon. Many thanks to Cathy Dean, Oliver Luck and the entire Harris County-Houston Sports Authority for once again bringing this event to Houston! Great job. The fabulous work that ALL the volunteers did at the 2005 NCAA's was noticed, appreciated and went into the decision to award Houston the event once again. Thanks to all!

Just FYI, there is now a thread on this same topic on Fencing Net.

Marty Wysocki posted the following on another thread:
Let me add what a tremendous accomplishment it was to bring the NAC to Houston two weeks ago. If you can volunteer your time or efforts, contact Marty, right away.
(You know you can count me in, Marty!)
I also took a look at the HISD webpage and the week of the NCAAs just happens to coincide with spring break. Perhaps some of our high-school fencers can help out.

Aluminum strips will be used for this year's NCAA Championships. NCAA has secured the 12 needed for the competition rounds but 5 more are still needed for practice and replacements. Does any know who has strips, either one, two or all five that can be loaned? We will pay a reasonable rental charge and pay/arrange all freight. Thanks

You might inquire of the clubs at UT and Texas State...

Cathy: I will likely see Oscar Barrera this Saturday. His wife, Esperanza is fencing down here. He is the Chair of the South Texas Division. If you can send me an email with a contact number, I'll telephone Saturday to let you know what may be available there. john@trojanowski.comAs to the UT connection... Anything you might add, kd5mdk?

The South Texas Division has 3 copper mesh strips. ATAC has 4 (or maybe 5 if it's been fixed) rigid metal strips. Texas State also has one extremely heavy raised rigid metal strip.
I'll ask at practice Wednesday and let you know something.

To be honest, the Texas State strips (the boxlike ones anyway) are a bit irregular surfaced. I got complaints about them at the Pouj.
The University of Texas Fencing Team has 2 very nice sectional aluminum strips which they may make available, if you need them.
I've sent an email to the club president and coach, we'll see what they say.

North Texas also has an indeterminate number of old copper strips, of which, I believe, 8 are of useful utility. We're not going to be using them that weekend for the SSCC event, as the LOC has decided they'd prefer to rent new ones from Swordmasters.

The offer for copper strips is much appreciated. The NCAA however is requiring us to use the metal strips (even for the practice strips we will have to set up). As we are looking for practice strips, ANYTHING anyone has will work. If anyone is willing to let us use ANY metal strip, please call. THANKS! We will be calling for volunteers to help as runners and work with the bout committee and armory. Please call if you can help. Finally, I have some small posters to advertise the NCAA tournament that you might consider posting in your club. If you want a couple call me, I will send some to you. Hey this years addition has two SABER fencers pictured (finally the NCAA uses it's head ). Marty Wysocki 713 870 3346 cilcia@sbcglobal.net

You know me, Marty.
Consider me a volunteer.
Even if copper is a no-go on this event, it may be possible to rent some combination of ATAC's 4 rigid strips and UTFC's 2.
See, it all comes together.

Marty, I spoke with Oscar and you can use the Division's 3 copper mesh strips. They are in my storage locker. The TSU strips are available, too. That's seven total. Contact Oscar about it. ob01@txstate.edu

I passed on the message to the UT president ( president@utfencing.org ) and Paul, the coach, so hopefully they've responded positively.

NCAA's are soon upon us. Already teams are calling in for hotel reservations and making arrangements for outside practice space. Notre Dame alone is bringing enough athletes to reserve 13 rooms, this before the Regional Qualifications have taken space. Very exciting! A great opportunity for local clubs to build on.

Cathy,
I believe both Paul and Oscar will be in town this weekend to referee at the Southwest Sectional Circuit Cup. Did you want to stop by?

The outside practice space interests me. Are they renting facilities from local clubs?
