From my e-mail:
I am writing on behalf of the Rice Fencing Club requesting that the club be considered as a "new club" for purposes of joining SWIFA midseason.
I came to Rice in 2011-2012 and joined the nearly extinct fencing club. At that time there were three student members in total and it was classified by the Club Sports office as a recreational, not competition club sport. In 2012-2013 I became president of the club and made recruitment efforts. This fall the club has maintained a stable membership and I believe that RFC is ready to join SWIFA.
There was unfortunately no documentation of the club's activity and previous involvement in SWIFA available to me. However, the SWIFA website indicates that Rice last participated in 2008-2009.
I hope the current SWIFA members will accommodate this request so that Rice can be competitive and continue to grow a membership base of fencers interested in competing. We are looking forward to joining the league!
Thank you,
Rachel Margolis
RFC President
There is a precedent for having new teams join us mid-season. I'll already be calling a special meeting at the 2013-2014 SWIFA #3 for a vote on Incarnate Word joining and we'll vote on this matter then, too.
The only issue I have with Rice rejoining right now is that this not set a precedent for teams to sit out part of a season and come in late in order to pay lower dues. We can't plan and pay for the competitions if that starts to occur. This situation looks very different; where a team goes extinct and comes "back to life", so to speak.
I hope the existing member teams will see it differently as well and vote them back in mid-season.
