Just out of curiosity, who was Ken Hogan?

I remember Ken Hogan from when I was a beginner in 80, and fenced against him in my first Van Buskirk. He was a "C" level fencer, and that was when you were a "C" or above or nothing at all. He was a very nice person, honest on strip, and someone who loved to talk and participate in fencing. It would be he and I(U) versus the Olympians in Sebastiani pool nights.
He became very ill approximately 1989 or 1990, and was not able to participate and this illness lead to his death. He was a frequent competitor in Gulf Coast and San Marcos tournaments.
It is fitting that Texas State, then SWT honor him in an annual tournament. There is also the Wilson/Sylvia tournament in Dallas from Al Wilson and Dan Sylvia that honors two more men fun to be around and good sports.
Al Wilson was approximately 39, and had already gone through a triple bypass. Back when it was pools all the way to the finals everyone was concerned or curious who their pools were based on the fencing of the previous round. During the 2nd round of a Duel at Dallas, (4 rounds of pools 50% up then DEs from the 16), I helped stage a phony pool that was first called. I put Al, myself, Dave Husky, Oscar and John Shanks in the pool along with the visiting national fencer and Al just about had a cow. It was the final 4/8 and not the pool in the top 48. It did not take long for him to question the seeding.
