SALVATORE SANZO AND ANDREA CASSARA’ TOMORROW IN PARIS FOR A SERIES OF IMPORTANT TESTS IN ANTICIPATION OF CHANGES TO FOIL FENCING
07/15/2005, Paris - Tomorrow, July 16, in Paris, Salvatore Sanzo and Andrea Cassarà will take part in a series of tests of foil fencing innovations. The President of the FIE wants to introduce these changes at the start of the 2005-2006 fencing season. With the Italian champions will be the German champion Ralph Bissdorf (president of the FIE Athletes Commission) and probably also the French Brice Guyart, the current Olympic champion.
If these changes, which were announced by Roch in the last issue of Escrime, will be approved, they will represent a true revolution for foil. The idea of the volcanic president of the FIE is to substantially increase the target area and to eliminate the white light signaling an off target hit.
Let's start with the target area. Tomorrow Sanzo, Cassarà and company will fence each other wearing a special overall with an electrified bib and sleeves (excluding the glove of the weapon arm). This way the target will be similar to saber. In the "new" foil as imagined by Roch only the head and the weapon forearm will remain out of bound.
The other important change concerns the white light which signals a non valid hit. This, according to Roch, must be eliminated. Two reasons: one, to make the fencing action easier to understand by the public at large; the other is because foil, as it has already happened with saber, should transition to a wireless technology which cannot accommodate the white light to go on. As you can see, lots of irons on the fire. At this point all we can do is wait for the results of these tests and the comments by the fencers who will be the first to try these changes.
