So who out there has a referee rating or is interested in getting one? That is to say, would it be worthwhile to try to do some type of clinic a couple of tournaments in advance of the Gulf Coast Circuit?
I'd be willing to offer whatever insights I have if there is an interest. That said, however, I don't think the Gulf Coast Circuit is the time or the place to rate new refs.

I should also point out that I can't give ratings, but I do know a fair amount about refereeing.

Dan:
That's great. There is a guy in my club (Clear Lake) who really enjoys directing and has expressed an interest in getting rated.
In fact, he was among the sabre fencers at last week's competition at UH.
I'll see him Thursday night.

As to the rest of your question, I think the only people in the division with referee ratings, according to the FOC, are you, Jerry Dunaway and Luis Casado (and he does not appear to bother with local events).

To my experience Luis Casado doesn't bother with anything below national level. We've tried to get him for stuff before and he's never replied. He hasn't even replied regarding coaching or developing sabre in the area.

Couldn't say as I have not met the man. Maybe he's just real busy and bad at replying to e-mails from strangers (says the guy whose mom once asked if he was still alive).

So, if I remember an article on the rogue page from last month right, if we eliminate Casado, Dan, you are the only level 5 or better director in this division?
I guess we all better be nice to you between now and divisional qualifiers.
Or get ready to import some outside talent.

Or develop some talent, I'd like to have rated refs for both my students and my bouts also. Of course I'd also still like people to be nice to me.

I've heard some of the long-timers at my club talking lately about seeing what the expense would be in bringing someone down to give a seminar and get the ball rolling.
Sounded like they were working on how to give the written just ahead of a tournament and then use the tourney as the practical.
Someone was mentioning "killing two birds with one stone," and stuff like that. (Getting directors for the event and rating them at the same time.)

Well, epee would be easy enough, I suppose. You're hit, you're hit.
I don't want to sound like an old grump so early in the day, but who cares with foil? It's like sabre, now. ROW goes to the first person to charge.
Looks more like jousting.

Not really, they've just made it a lot more likely to award an attack on preparation. Should reduce a lot of flicks. I thought people would be happy with the newer approach.

I haven't watched enough bouts lately to say how it's going, but I consider the concept of "Intent to Attack" about as worthy as the "Intent to Parry".

Looks like Dan was right. With the talk coming out of Liepzig, looks like attacks on the preparation are gonna be a pretty worthwhile addition to a fencer's mental tool box. Actually, one of the things I love about foil is the feel you get after executing a successful attack on your opponent's preparation. It is really sweet.

Not to revive a thread or anything, but...
After the Katy Blades Clinic, the Pouj and the one at Battle on the Bayou, how are we fixed for refs? The FOC page doesn't look like it's been updated recently.

I'm curious about this as well. I took the seminar, took the tests, and was observed officating. I've had no indication of what my director's rating is. o.O

Katman, after you were observed the referee who observed you should have taken you aside and discussed your strengths and weaknesses as a referee. After a determination was made of the level of the competition of the bouts you refereed and how you did, you should have been told what your new level is. If your observer didn't do this, you need to track him or her down and have that conversation.

He discussed my strengths and weaknesses but didn't tell me, "You're an eight," or "You're a nine." I guess Mr. Van der Wedge will be getting a call from me.

*LOL* ;D I wished I knew more that I do about fencing... Actually, I am quite curious about the written referee test since I want to get trained in the near future. So, for those of you that have been through the training seminars, how was it?

Took it cold and passed the general and epee and failed foil and sabre. Read the rules and passed the other 2 sections easily. If you read the rules and don't read into the question -- just pay attention to the words they use and the order they use them in -- and it should be easy enough. I hear the study guide is helpful too, but I didn't use it.

Cool! So when will the next seminar be held?

The next known seminar in the area is at the DeGall ( although it is not mentioned on the flier www.fenceintexas.org/PDFfiles/DeGallflyer.pdf -- warning, 228 K file) Friday evening the 16th. Grace, I don't see you pre-registered for the saber events there yet! Details (mentioned in messages on the texas-fencing e-mail list): and I can't say about Sectionals at the beginning of May, but that would be the next occasion to watch for a possible opportinity. Clear Lake Fencing Club plans a tournament the weekend after Sectionals, and if it can possibly be arranged, and if local demand hasn't been satisfied, it is intended to have referee development. And, without doubt, there will be opportunitites for the seminar and testing (although not necessarily examinations, unless the candidate is already expected to referee well enough for what the tournament needs) at Summer Nationals.

I would suggest that sectionals is a time for experienced referees and not so much for referee development.
