Too bad! The weekend of DeGall I am hositing a beginners tournament here for my kids. Also, in addition to Sectionals being held so far away, I agree with Dan that this would probably not be an appropriate time to train referees. So, how about it Clear Lake?

CLFC didn't have access to a referee examiner or referee instructor on the occasion of its tournament. However, it might come to pass instead at CLFC's FĂȘte de Lune Veterans Tournament in August. Certainly there will be seminar and test opportunities at Summer Nationals in early July. For opportunities sooner and closer than that, just keep your ear to the ground. And, Grace, I know you're personally already in contact with CLFC's preferred referee instructor, who would certainly know when he gets scheduled for something (whether or not it is with CLFC).

Both Grace and Megan Haberzettle passed the Referee certification in Sabre at the RYC last weekend. Good Show, Ladies! ;D

Hey, I was doing epee all day that Saturday (to get bumped up from an epee 10 to an 8) and never saw them!
(of course, the epee got bumped to the "other" room... as opposed to the "nice" room).

Both Grace and Megan Haberzettle passed the Referee certification in Sabre at the RYC last weekend. Good Show, Ladies! Longblade, true, but off topic. They aren't referees in the Gulf Coast Division. Your own division gets credit for them. That same weekend. the Metro Division also acquired a newly minted referee which Gulf Coast cannot claim. Acutally, Gulf Coast did benefit -- four new referees (three one-weapon and one three-weapon), an additional weapon for an existing referee, two people who have now taken the seminar but not tested, and schlager7 and I unexpectedly received upgrades. (Before somebody says they berely saw me refereeing, it seems that to a great extent the upgrade was based on observations of me at two previous tournaments.)

Matt: You're correct, but they are only in the South Texas Division by six blocks! And they show up at your tournaments as much as ours. I'm sure the South Texas Division will be happy to share these talented ladies with y'all! *L* Kyle

Wow! I haven't read the forum in a while and look at all the juicy gossip I missed out on! *LOL* We were there, and I'm sorry we missed hugging your neck, Schlager. However, you and Nicole were really busy with epee (Thank God someone knows how to direct that strange weapon of no right of way!!! I would never have dreamed that it has so many technical rules!). I attended the referee seminar in order to fulfill requirements for my monituer level coaching certification in sabre. I should have directed some foil because I passed the written part of it, too, but it just did not work out. I whole-heatedly thank Louise from Bayou City Fencing Club for allowing us to attend. Gary did a great job, as was expected, and Paul was a wonderful share referee. Remember, we are still wearing training wheels as 10s. No one needs to share us just yet. Let us get a little more practice time in with all the things we learned in Houston first. Incidentally, we really enjoy riding the HWY 77 fence and having buddies from both divisions. I do not know anyone else that is quite so lucky. ;D

I know that Louise Lepie is planning to set up another referee seminar for the weekend of Battle on the Bayou. If she can organize the event, then there will be a seminar on Friday evening, after which those who wish can take the written exam and be observed during the weekend while refereeing at the tournament.
For those of us who have taken the test, it is a good opportunity to be observed if you are seeking a higher rating than you currently posses.
If we can work it out, Clear Lake may do something similar for our Spring open.

I can remember just a few years ago there were only a couple of rated refs down here. (I believe Dan Gorman was one) Look at the FOC site, now!
Over two dozen.
Granted, most are fairly low rated, but they have mostly only become rated refs in the last year.
I really think this division is starting to come out of its prolonged funk at last (at least, where referees are concerned.)

To be fair, while it IS a big improvement, there are also some errors on the FOC page. It still lists Brad Goldie and Luis Casado as being in the Gulf Coast Division, although both have since moved out of state and Daniel Jarvis is listed twice.
On the other hand, it does NOT list those who were taking the seminar held by Gary van der Wege this last weekend, so very likely the number is about right.
BTW: After running for refs in this division on the FOC page, I really DO have one nagging question. When did Dina marry Matt Delevoryas? ;D

I think the main thing now is to continue to encourage fencers to attend the referee seminars and take the exams and...
(insert big AND)
NOT let them get discouraged when they have tough tournaments. It's easy to get irritated by a newbie who doesn't see the action you just KNOW you executed flawlessly.
Just as each of us began clueless about fencing, so starting as a referee must be an intimidating prospect. I know there is no way I would do it. I will, however, try to always be civil to my referee.

I am from Plains Texas but I am more than willing to travel to referee. I am a F=6, E=6, S=10 but I do not want to do sabre at this time.
Just thought this was a good place to post and offer my services...

Well, I understand that Saberbob also recently picked up some additional referee ratings, including in that "strange weapon of no right of way." Snicker... Snort... ;D Errrr...

You are right about that, Longblade. I am certifiable in three different ways! Sabre... foil... and...and...and...EVEN..... *sigh* *cough* *groan* e...p...e...e... LOLOLOL!!!!! Of course I feel the most comfortable with sabre! Foil is not so bad. But... ew-la-la what about that 2% of weird stuff in epee!!! So, when are you going to match me?

Upper Level Foil Referee and Basic Referee Certification Seminars will be held in San Marcos June 24 and 25. Gary van der Wege will do the basic seminar on Friday evening at the Aqua Sports Gym. Saturday's seminars at the Jowers Gym will feature the 'rules interpretation seminar', now required for maintaining existing ratings, and the advanced foil seminar presented by Gary and Brian Gibson. Participants will have a chance to referee rated foil fencers in actual bout scenarios. For more info, contact: wedge@centurytel.net
