Birmingham FC (Alabama) Referee Training Clinic
Sept. 10 - 11, 2005
askfred.net/Events/moreInfo.php?tournament_id=1123
The Birmingham Fencing Club hosted its first referee clinic in 2004. This resulted in seven new rated referees and a growth in total rated referees in the entire Southeast of approximately 15%. This was made possible by the USFA Fencing Officials Committee (FOC) and through a lot of work by our own parents and other volunteers.
The next opportunity to earn a referee rating will be on September 10-11. The Birmingham Fencing Club will host another FOC referee clinic with training provided by Jeff Bukantz. This referee clinic is being held in cooperation with our friends at the Chattanooga Fencing Club. After the referee testing in Birmingham, Chattanooga will host a tournament on October 22-33. FOC examiner and chairman, Bill Oliver, will be present at the Chattanooga tournament to administer the practical (observation) portion of the test. This partnership between Birmingham and Chattanooga represents the type of creative solution that will help develop fencing in the Southeast.
Prior to the referee clinic, students are required to download a copy of the current rulebook from the FOC web site www.fencingofficials.org and study it thoroughly before the clinic begins. Written tests in all three weapons will be administered on Sunday.
Details related to the Chattanooga fencing tournament can be found on www.AskFred.net. Pre-registration for the referee clinic is required to attend (payment can be made upon arrival).
The cost for the Birmingham referee clinic is $50 regardless of which tests are taken. There are plenty of hotels in the area that are available at a reasonable price. Contact David Arias at darias@bsc.edu or 205-515-3902 for additional information.
For referees that have already earned a rating, the referee clinic will provide additional skills and information related to new and potential changes to the rules. A higher level training session will be held on Saturday for experienced referees. Testing for weapons in which you are not already rated will also be available. The Chattanooga tournament will provide an opportunity to increase current referee ratings as well as meet the practical test requirements for those passing the written test on new/additional weapons.
Preregistration opens on 08/03/2005.
Preregistration closes on 09/09/2005.
